Alkorta on Mbappé and Vinicius: The Ego Problem

Real Madrid’s biggest problem isn’t talent. It’s temperament. That’s the verdict of former defender Rafa Alkorta, who believes personalities – not tactics – have stalled the partnership between Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior.

“Since Mbappe arrived, the issue has been one of egos,” Alkorta said, cutting straight to the point. “I’ve never understood the whole ego thing, nor did I experience it in a dressing room, but the reality is that the connection hasn't quite clicked.”

On paper, it should be devastating. Mbappé is a 50-goal-a-season forward, Vinicius one of the most explosive wide men in the game. On the pitch, though, the chemistry has flickered rather than burned.

“Mbappe scores 50 goals a season, and hopefully, Mourinho can get the two of them performing well together,” Alkorta added. “If Vinicius stays, Mourinho will demand things from him that previous coaches couldn't get. He’s surely already made his expectations clear.”

Mourinho steps into the fault line

The Portuguese coach has walked into a dressing room loaded with star power and unfinished business. His task is clear: turn two global superstars into a functioning, ruthless duo.

Alkorta believes Mourinho is already drawing hard lines.

The former Spain international didn’t spare Vinicius, either. “I think Vinicius's last two years haven't been good,” he said, pointing to both the lack of fluency with Mbappé on the ball and what he sees as a total absence of connection off it. “They’ve had very little chemistry with the ball and none at all off the ball.”

This is the context in which Real Madrid are trying to lock down Vinicius’s future. Representatives of the 26-year-old have held talks with the club about extending his contract beyond 2027, and the mood around the table has reportedly shifted to “moderately optimistic” after both sides moved closer in negotiations.

“Fans will be happy that he’s close to renewing,” he said, welcoming the progress while underlining the scale of Mourinho’s challenge. In his view, the new coach is attempting something neither Xabi Alonso nor Álvaro Arbeloa managed: turning the Mbappé–Vinicius pairing into a genuine, cohesive force.

Pre-season as a proving ground

Real Madrid now move into a crucial stretch of their preparations. A friendly against Ferencvaros on Saturday, then Deportivo La Coruña four days later, will serve as Mourinho’s first real laboratories for this uneasy alliance.

The calendar doesn’t leave much room for hesitation. On August 22, Los Blancos open their 2026/27 Liga campaign away to Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. By then, Mourinho will want more than promises and negotiations. He will want evidence that Mbappé and Vinicius can finally share not just a forward line, but a common language on the pitch.

Because for all the talk of contracts and egos, the season will quickly pose a simple question: can two of the game’s biggest stars learn to win together, or will Madrid spend another year waiting for a connection that never quite arrives?
