Alex Scott Eyes Chelsea Move After Bournemouth Rejects £64m Bid
Alex Scott is pushing for a move to Chelsea after Bournemouth rejected a £64million offer for the midfielder, setting up one of the window’s most intriguing stand-offs.
The 22-year-old is understood to be keen on the switch to Stamford Bridge, seeing it as the next step after a breakout season on the south coast. Bournemouth, though, are digging in. Internally, the message is clear: Scott is not for sale.
That stance comes as the club try to tie him down to a new contract. Scott, for his part, has no intention of signing one.
His rise under Andoni Iraola has given him the leverage to think bigger. Scott played a key role as Bournemouth surged into the Europa League places last season, thriving in Iraola’s high-energy system and confirming the promise he showed at Bristol City.
Bournemouth moved early to protect their asset. A new deal was first put on the table in March, with confidence at the time that the midfielder could be persuaded to commit his long-term future. Those talks have since stalled. As negotiations cooled, interest in Scott heated up — and Chelsea have now made their move.
The rejected £64m bid is unlikely to be the end of it. Chelsea are accelerating their pursuit, aware that other heavyweights are circling and keen to plant a flag before a full-scale auction breaks out.
Arsenal and Manchester City have both been credited with an interest in Scott, but neither has yet taken the step of making a formal approach for the England international. That gives Chelsea a head start, but not a free run.
Scott’s international story is at a similar tipping point. He missed out on selection for England’s World Cup squad, but did receive a call-up to train with the senior team in the build-up to the tournament. Inside the camp, he is viewed as part of the next wave — one of the players earmarked to refresh Thomas Tuchel’s squad after their semi-final exit to Argentina.
At club level, the timing of Chelsea’s move is no coincidence. They are braced for upheaval in midfield. Enzo Fernandez has made clear his desire to leave, forcing the club to plan for life without their record signing.
Chelsea have slapped a £120m price tag on Fernandez. Head coach Alonso has said he wants to keep the 25-year-old, but with Real Madrid ruling out a move for the former Benfica man, there is no guarantee a buyer will emerge at that figure.
That uncertainty only sharpens the focus on Scott. Bournemouth want to build around him. Chelsea want to build with him. The player wants the step up.
Something, somewhere, will have to give.
