José Mourinho Targets Martín Zubimendi for Real Madrid
José Mourinho has given Real Madrid the go-ahead: Martín Zubimendi is back on their agenda.
The Portuguese coach, now in charge at the Bernabéu, has reportedly told the club’s hierarchy to move for the Arsenal midfielder in this summer window, with Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claiming the 27-year-old has forced his way back into Los Blancos’ plans.
It is a transfer story that has circled back on itself. Zubimendi was strongly linked with Real Madrid a year ago, just as Xabi Alonso arrived, only for the Spain international to choose Arsenal instead in a deal worth 65 million euros. Now, after Rodri rejected a switch to the Spanish capital, his name has returned to the top of the list.
The dynamics have changed in north London. Zubimendi has lost much of his status in Mikel Arteta’s side, and his representatives are now sounding out potential exits. They are weighing up a market in which Real Madrid suddenly look like a viable option again.
From Arsenal’s side, the stance is pragmatic rather than desperate. The Gunners are open to a sale, but only on their terms. Any offer would have to exceed the 65 million euros they paid last summer, with the club under no pressure to sell below that mark.
For Mourinho, the profile fits. He is still pushing hard for a creative midfielder to add another layer to Madrid’s engine room and has already approved a move for Zubimendi. The coach sees him as a solution; the club see obstacles.
Two conditions block an immediate deal. The first is Arsenal’s asking price, which leaves little room for negotiation. More decisive, though, is Real Madrid’s internal situation: someone has to leave. The message from the Bernabéu is clear – there will be no further signings unless an existing squad member makes way.
So the move sits in limbo. Mourinho has made his choice. Arsenal are listening. Zubimendi is open. Now it comes down to whether Madrid are willing to sacrifice one of their own to reshape a midfield that could define their next era.
