Alex Mowatt Joins Derby County on Two-Year Deal

Derby County have finally landed their man.

Alex Mowatt has completed a permanent move from West Bromwich Albion, signing a two-year deal for a fee understood to be in the region of £600,000 – far below the £2m figure that had been circulating in the West Midlands.

The midfielder passed his medical and wrapped up the formalities today, ending a long pursuit by head coach John Eustace, who had tried to bring him in last summer. Derby kept watching, kept asking the question, and this time West Brom said yes.

Long-term target finally arrives

Mowatt, in the final year of his contract at the Hawthorns, had signed a two-year extension to stay with Albion, but Derby never backed off. Eustace wanted his experience, his left foot, and his calm at the base of midfield.

That Championship know-how is central to the deal. Mowatt has spent the last five years at West Brom, with spells out on loan, and built a reputation as a midfielder who can knit play together from deep while still carrying a threat from distance and set-pieces.

He has already featured for Albion this season, starting in their 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham and playing 73 minutes before being replaced by Conor Townsend. That outing underlined he was still in the picture at the Hawthorns – which makes Derby’s breakthrough all the more notable.

A career built in the Championship

Doncaster-born Mowatt came through the Leeds United academy, breaking into the first team at Elland Road before moving to Barnsley. It was at Oakwell that his influence truly spiked: he captained the Tykes to the Championship play-offs in 2021 and made more than 140 appearances for the club.

A loan spell at Oxford United added another layer to his education, before he reunited with Valerien Ismaël at West Brom on a free transfer. On signing him, Ismaël was emphatic about what Mowatt would bring, calling him “an outstanding midfield player with outstanding qualities and mentality,” highlighting his threat from outside the box and on set-pieces, and labelling him “a hard worker with the right mentality and a lot of energy.”

Mowatt also spent time on loan at Middlesbrough, helping them to a fourth-place finish in the Championship and reinforcing his status as a proven performer at this level. Along the way, he has represented England at under-19 and under-20 level, another marker of the pedigree Derby are buying.

Now he swaps the Hawthorns for Pride Park, carrying that body of work into a dressing room that has wanted him for more than a year. Derby have their deep-lying playmaker. The question now is how far his experience can drive their push up the table.
