Barcelona finalizes Ferran Torres deal with PSG as Rodri negotiations advance

Barcelona and PSG have struck an agreement for Ferran Torres, a move that now feels like a matter of days rather than weeks away from becoming official.

It closes a curious chapter. When Robert Lewandowski walked out this summer, the path cleared for Torres to finally own a season at the Camp Nou. Starting spot there for the taking, new coach, new hierarchy, a World Cup winner in his prime.

Instead, he chose the exit.

Torres used the momentum of his World Cup status to push for a transfer, and Barcelona did not stand in his way for a second. No public stand-off, no late U-turn. Just a clean break and a sizeable cheque.

A deal Barcelona can live with

The numbers explain the lack of regret inside the club.

Barcelona will bring in close to €50 million from PSG for the 26-year-old forward, a fee that looks even better when placed against his contractual situation. Torres had just one year left on his deal in Catalonia. For a player running down his contract, this is strong business in the eyes of the board.

The operation also makes sense on the balance sheet. Factoring in amortisation, Barça will register a net profit on the initial investment they made when they signed him from Manchester City. On top of that, they avoid the €8 million payment that would have gone to City had they triggered a renewal.

So they walk away with a fee, a profit, and a saving. No wonder, as reported by MARCA, there is no internal sense of loss over his departure.

From the sporting side, the message is just as clear. Barcelona see the move as an opportunity to redirect resources towards players fully committed to Hansi Flick’s project. A backup forward out, a reshaped spine in mind.

Rodri at the centre of the rebuild

While Barcelona and PSG were haggling over the final details for Torres, the Catalan club were locked in another negotiation – this time with Manchester City, over Rodri.

No agreement yet, but the talks are described as advanced. The feeling around the club is that once Torres’ move is signed off and announced, the path to Rodri could open quickly.

This is the move that really excites the sporting department. A World Cup-winning midfielder, a Ballon d’Or winner, and a player tailor-made for Flick’s positional game. Inside the club, the idea of effectively swapping a rotational forward for a starting midfielder of Rodri’s calibre is seen as a major upgrade in pure footballing terms.

Barcelona know they will still have to go back into the market for a new forward. Julian Alvarez remains the preferred option for that role, a name that has never left the top of their attacking shortlist. But right now, all eyes are on the midfield.
