Aleksandar Pavlovic Rejects Manchester City Transfer Amid Midfield Overhaul

Aleksandar Pavlovic has turned down some offers in his young career. But walking away from Manchester City at the height of their midfield rebuild might be the boldest yet.

According to Bild, the 22-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder sat at the top of City’s wish list as far back as March. Scouts and decision-makers in Manchester had settled on him as their ideal signing for the centre of the pitch. The plan was clear, the admiration genuine – and the budget enormous.

City were prepared to go as high as €100 million to prise Pavlovic out of Munich. Money, in this case, was not the problem. The player was. He simply did not want to leave Bayern or the Bundesliga for England.

Guardiola out, Maresca in – same answer from Pavlovic

By the time spring rolled around, the landscape at City had already shifted. Inside the club it was understood that Pep Guardiola would step down, with Enzo Maresca lined up to take over. The change on the touchline did not change the thinking in the recruitment department: Pavlovic remained the priority.

Maresca himself tried to move the deal along. The Italian coach made a personal push to convince the Germany international. It made no difference. Pavlovic ruled out a transfer in clear terms, shutting the door so firmly that City never even reached the stage of lodging an official bid.

So City turned to Plan B. And then Plan C. And then something closer to a full-scale demolition and rebuild of their midfield.

City rip up the midfield and spend big

This summer’s window saw an exodus in the middle of the park at the Etihad. Rodri left for Barcelona. Bernardo Silva joined Real Madrid. Tijjani Reijnders moved to Al-Qadsiah. Nico Gonzalez headed to Newcastle. Four pillars of City’s structure, gone in one window.

For a long stretch, the response looked surprisingly thin. The only confirmed reinforcement in central midfield was Elliot Anderson, signed from Nottingham for €135 million. One big swing, but hardly enough to cover the loss of that much experience and quality.

The urgency grew as the deadline approached. City reacted. Late in the window they brought in Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for €95 million and Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for €145 million. Three midfielders, three heavyweight fees, one frantic attempt to reshape the heart of the team.

The numbers are stark. On central midfielders alone, City spent €375 million in the last window. None of that money went on the player they had originally ring-fenced as the perfect fit.

Bayern’s homegrown anchor stays put

While City scrambled, Pavlovic stayed exactly where he wanted to be.

A product of Bayern’s youth system, he has climbed through the ranks in Munich and broken into the first team with authority. Last season he made 44 competitive appearances for the club, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Those are solid numbers for a young central midfielder, but they only tell part of the story: Bayern see him as a long-term cornerstone.

Germany have moved quickly too. Pavlovic made his senior international debut in June 2024 and has already collected 15 caps. In a national setup constantly searching for stability in midfield, he has wasted no time establishing himself as a regular option.

So while City threw hundreds of millions at the problem and rebuilt on the fly, Pavlovic chose continuity over upheaval, Bayern over the Premier League, familiarity over the grand English project.
