Here’s the breakdown of the 32 nations moving forward:
How the Round of 32 Works
Also called the knockout stage, this round shifts the tournament into single-elimination mode. No points, no draws — every match must produce a winner who advances, while the loser is out.
If teams are tied after regular time, they play 30 minutes of extra time. Should the score still be level, a penalty shootout decides the winner. Five players per team take shots from the penalty spot, and whoever scores more moves on.
Path to the Final
The 32 teams earned their places through regional qualifiers. The initial group stage divided 48 teams into 14 groups of four. Each team faced the others once, with wins worth three points, draws one, and losses zero. Tie-breakers included goal difference and goals scored.
The top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-place finishers, advanced to the knockout phase. From there, single elimination determines who moves from Round of 32 to Round of 16, then quarterfinals, semifinals, and finally the championship match.
