Tournament Format Explained
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three group matches to decide who advances. From there, 32 teams reach the knockout stage: the top two in each group plus the eight best third-place finishers.
Tiebreakers follow this order: goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, fair play record, then drawing lots. FIFA introduced changes to avoid top-ranked teams meeting before the final. For instance, Spain (top seed) and defending champion Argentina (second seed) are on opposite sides of the bracket, as are France and England, ranked third and fourth.
Teams from the same confederation cannot share a group, except for European nations.
