Yamal Poised for Breakthrough

Lamine Yamal recently helped Barcelona claim the 2025-26 La Liga title and is still in the running for the Ballon d’Or. Although he hasn’t yet made a decisive mark in Spain’s World Cup journey, he is never to be underestimated.

"The World Cup is the decisive point for the Ballon d’Or," Mendieta said. "For the same reasons Harry Kane might have secured it, Lamine Yamal could still do so. He had an amazing season despite injuries and was very important for Barcelona. He remains vital for Spain."

Mendieta added that if Spain wins, players like Mikel Oyarzabal might also get recognition. If Argentina triumphs, Messi is likely to take the prize again.

Handling Pressure Like Messi

Messi influenced Argentina’s semi-final against England with two assists, showcasing his ability to rise under pressure. Over the years, he’s learned to manage the intense focus that follows him.

Yamal faces a different challenge. Opponents often swarm him with multiple defenders, sometimes three or four, trying to stifle his threat. Yet, the young winger thrives in these moments, weaving past rivals and creating space for teammates.

"Lamine Yamal often has two, three, or even four players closing in on him. He hasn’t been at his absolute best recently, but reaching the final will boost his confidence. He is a different kind of weapon for Spain," Mendieta noted.

He explained that Yamal’s presence opens up chances for others like Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella, making him invaluable even when not scoring.

"Even if he isn’t scoring, he had a goal disallowed against France, his presence gives the team confidence. He wants to be the best player on the pitch in the final."

Injury Concerns Before the Final

Yamal has been managing a minor thigh injury, sitting out a pre-final training session with his leg strapped. Despite this, expectations are that he will start for coach Luis de la Fuente.
