World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Update: France, Argentina, Norway Join USA, Mexico, Germany in Round of 32
As the second matchday unfolds, the knockout stage lineup for the 2026 World Cup is becoming clearer. Two of the host nations, United States and Mexico, have already secured their group titles, advancing confidently to the Round of 32. Meanwhile, Canada has earned four points from two games and will face Switzerland soon to decide the winner of Group B.
The knockout stage will feature 32 teams: the top two from each group, plus the eight best third-place finishers.
Tie-Breaking Rules Set by FIFA
FIFA outlined the procedures to break ties between teams:
- First, the highest number of points earned in matches among the tied teams.
- If still unresolved, superior goal difference and then the highest goals scored within those matches.
- If ties persist, overall goal difference and goals scored in all group matches come into play.
- Next is the team conduct score based on yellow and red cards.
- Finally, FIFA rankings will be used if all else fails.
Teams Already Through
- United States: Victories over Paraguay and Australia secured Group D early. They await a third-place finisher from Groups B, E, F, I, or J for their July 1 game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
- Mexico: Two clean sheets against South Africa and South Korea crowned them Group A winners. Their next match is on June 30 at Estadio Azteca against a third-place side from Group C, E, F, H, or I.
- Germany: Wins against Curaçao and Ivory Coast placed them atop Group E after Ecuador and Curaçao drew. They'll meet a third-place team from Groups A, B, C, D, or F on June 29 in Boston.
- Argentina: A Monday victory over Austria guaranteed their knockout berth, with Algeria's win over Jordan confirming Group J's outcome. Argentina’s last group game is Saturday versus Jordan, before facing the runner-up of Group H in Miami on July 3.
- France and Norway: Both secured knockout spots following wins against Iraq and Senegal. Their Friday clash in Boston will determine who tops Group I, impacting their Round of 32 seeding.
Teams Eliminated
- Haiti: Returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, Haiti lost their opener to Scotland and were shut out again by Brazil. Their final match is against Morocco.
- Türkiye: Once considered contenders in Group D, Türkiye fell after losses to Australia and Paraguay. They will face group winners USA on Thursday in Los Angeles.
- Tunisia: After a heavy 5-1 defeat by Sweden, Tunisia replaced their coach with Hervé Renard. Yet a 4-0 loss to Japan in his debut ended their run.
- Jordan: After losing to Austria and Algeria, Jordan was eliminated despite one game remaining against Argentina.
New Knockout Bracket Format
This edition of the World Cup features changes to the knockout bracket aimed at balancing competition. Two separate paths lead to the semifinals to prevent the highest-ranked teams from clashing too early if they win their groups. For example, Spain, the tournament's top-ranked team, and defending champions Argentina are on opposite sides of the bracket. The same applies to France and England, ranked third and fourth respectively. This setup means the top four seeds cannot meet before the semifinals.
