When Will William Saliba Return? Update on Arsenal Defender's Back Injury Recovery

William Saliba's Recovery Timeline

After lifting the Premier League trophy last season, Arsenal aims even higher for the 2026/27 campaign, but injury concerns are looming. One major question is when key centre-back William Saliba will be back following surgery for a back injury.

The Injury Details

Saliba worsened an existing back problem during France’s World Cup semifinal clash against Spain. Early in that match, he was seen receiving treatment and was heard telling teammates "my back is gone." Despite the pain, he played through discomfort throughout the latter stages of the Premier League season and the Champions League run.

The exact nature of the injury remains unclear. Possibilities include a fracture, slipped disc, or nerve damage, but no detailed reports have surfaced. Saliba himself admitted to struggling with "minor niggles" over several months and acknowledged not being at full fitness during the World Cup.

"I've been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. The World Cup comes around only once every four years, so you've got to grit your teeth. I'm not at 100%, but there are plenty of players who aren't at 100% either. You can't make excuses."

Return Date Uncertain

No definitive comeback date has been announced. Earlier reports suggested Saliba might be sidelined for up to five months if he underwent surgery. Since he chose to avoid surgery, his return could happen sooner, though manager Mikel Arteta confirmed Saliba will miss matches at least until the September international break. This points to an earliest possible return in October, with a longer absence still possible.

How Arsenal Are Adapting Without Saliba

As of mid-August, Arsenal has not signed a new centre-back to cover Saliba's absence. Instead, Arteta is relying on backups Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera, both of whom saw solid playing time last season.

Mosquera started alongside Hincapie in the Community Shield win against Manchester City on August 16. Given Mosquera naturally plays on the right side and Hincapie on the left, Mosquera seems likely to hold his spot while Saliba recovers.

  • Injury: Back aggravated during World Cup semifinal
  • Possible conditions: Fracture, slipped disc, nerve damage (unconfirmed)
  • Recovery status: No fixed return date; out until at least September international break
  • Arsenal replacements: Piero Hincapie (left-sided), Cristhian Mosquera (right-sided)
