Why Cristiano Ronaldo Is Sitting Out Portugal's Match Against Norway
Portugal's Strong Start Under Jorge Jesus
Jorge Jesus has made an impressive impact as Portugal's coach, securing three straight wins since taking charge. He began with a tight victory over Wales and followed it up by beating Norway and Denmark on challenging away trips. At present, Portugal leads its UEFA Nations League group with a perfect record.
Still, this promising run hasn’t been without drama.
The Ronaldo Controversy
Cristiano Ronaldo has become the center of attention during this international break due to his absence from the lineup. The 41-year-old striker will not play in Portugal’s upcoming match against Norway on Sunday.
What Led to Ronaldo's Exclusion?
Ronaldo’s fiery temperament surfaced after he was left out by Jesus, who previously managed him at Al Nassr, during the recent fixture versus Norway. After a poor performance against Wales that ended with an early substitution, Ronaldo found himself on the bench in Oslo.
Although Jesus promised him some playing time, Ronaldo did not get on the field during Portugal’s 2–1 win. With the team trying to hold onto a slim lead, Jesus decided against introducing Ronaldo late in the game.
“I can promise whatever I want, I’m the coach,” Jesus stated after the match. “No player will ever make a decision for me.”
Ronaldo reacted strongly to both his omission and the coach’s comments, eventually choosing to leave the national team camp immediately. This decision ruled him out of the subsequent 4–2 victory over Denmark and the home match against Norway.
He explained on social media:
“After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp. In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”
Fans Rally Behind Ronaldo
Given Ronaldo’s 23 years of dedication to Portugal and his status as a national hero, many fans quickly voiced their support. Some even put up billboards around Lisbon and nearby areas to honor him.
- Billboard message: "Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you’ve done for Portugal. You will always be our captain. Portugal is always with you."
- Criticism of Jesus: Fans accused the new coach of "mistreating" Ronaldo and having an "inflated ego."
The controversy keeps stirring debate, casting uncertainty over Ronaldo’s future with the national squad and adding tension to Portugal’s campaign.
