West Ham Break EFL Transfer Record for Arne Engels

West Ham United have sent a statement to the rest of the Championship – and to the Premier League they want to rejoin – by breaking the EFL transfer record to sign Arne Engels from Celtic in a £22m deal.

The 22-year-old Belgium international has agreed a five-year contract, with the club describing the fee as a “record fee paid by an EFL Championship club”. That figure eclipses the £17.5m Ipswich Town spent last summer on Norway forward Sindre Walle Egeli and underlines just how aggressively West Ham intend to attack life outside the top flight.

Relegated in May, West Ham begin their first Championship campaign since 2012 with a trip to Burnley on Sunday. The new era starts there, but their headline signing will have to wait. Engels will not make his debut until the home league derby against Charlton Athletic at the London Stadium on Saturday, 22 August.

When he does walk out in claret and blue, he brings versatility and pedigree. Comfortable in midfield, at right-back or on the right wing, Engels offers options all over the right side and a profile that fits the rebuild.

Fourth Through the Door

Engels becomes West Ham’s fourth signing of a busy summer, following Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman and Israel winger Manor Solomon. It is not a scattergun spree. The club’s recruitment team have been clear they are building a core to climb straight back up.

Nils Koppen, West Ham’s director of player recruitment, made it plain how long this move has been in the works.

“Arne is a player we have been tracking for some time as a key target,” he told the club’s website. He highlighted Engels’ blend of youth and experience, praising his consistency and composure at a major club.

“For a player who is still very young with his best years in front of him, he has very good experience and has established himself at a big club, showing consistency and confidence. Arne has the right traits, both as a player and as a character, to fit into what we are trying to build moving forward. He is very motivated to be here for this challenge.”

Celtic to the Championship Chase

Engels arrives in London with a winning habit. He has made four appearances for Belgium and won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic after joining from Augsburg in August 2024, having started his career at Club Brugge. That route – Brugge, Bundesliga, Celtic, now a record move into the Championship – speaks to a player used to pressure, expectation and big crowds.

Now the pressure changes. At Celtic, the demand is to stay on top. At West Ham, it is to drag a fallen Premier League club back to where it believes it belongs.

Engels sounded ready for that responsibility.

“It's a really nice project to come into,” he said. “To try to go back to the Premier League. That's the big goal.

“It's just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins. Hopefully it's going to be a good year.”

A record fee, a multi-position international, and a club refusing to accept life in the second tier. West Ham have made their move. The Championship will now find out how much it changes the promotion race.
