Vinicius Jr's Future: Madrid's Star or Arsenal's Target?

The story was supposed to be simple. Real Madrid’s Champions League hero, the man who settled a final against Liverpool and grew into the face of their new era, tied down for the long term and paid like the superstar he has become.

Instead, a year and a half after talks began, Vinicius Junior’s future is wide open – and Arsenal are circling with intent.

A renewal that turned into a saga

When Madrid and Vinicius Jr first sat down to discuss a new deal, nobody at Valdebebas imagined this would drag on. He had already extended once, in 2022, committing until 2027 after arriving from Flamengo in 2018 for €45 million. That renewal was smooth, but it also revealed a key detail about how his camp think.

Back then, the club put several options on the table: different salaries for different contract lengths. Less money if he signed until 2027, more if he pushed to 2028 or 2029 – as Eder Militao and Rodrygo Goes did that same summer. Vinicius Jr and his inner circle backed the shorter deal. They believed the 2021-22 season, crowned by that decisive Champions League final goal, was only the start. His status would rise. So would his value. They wanted the chance to renegotiate quickly.

They were right. His salary has climbed with time and bonuses, including winning FIFA’s The Best award in 2024. He now earns around €18 million net per season. But that figure, in his eyes and those of his entourage, no longer reflects his place in the game.

The money, the bonus and the Mbappé problem

In January 2025, Madrid’s general manager Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat met Vinicius Jr, two of his agents and his father at Valdebebas. The club put forward a new offer: roughly €20 million net per year. It was turned down.

His camp returned with a counter-proposal. Madrid rejected that too.

By April, briefings from the club side suggested the renewal was “very advanced”. Reports in Spain followed that line. Those close to Vinicius Jr hit back hard, denying any such progress. The reality, as revealed by The Athletic, was stark: the Brazilian wanted a package approaching €30 million. Not just a higher base salary and performance bonuses, but a renewal bonus – something without precedent in Madrid’s history.

That bonus has become the red line.

Madrid argue they are at the limit of their wage cap. Vinicius Jr’s people see the bonus as the only realistic way to bridge the gap. The comparison is obvious and constant: Kylian Mbappé. The Frenchman’s salary is similar, but the signing bonus he received as a free agent from PSG in 2024 takes his total earnings to another level.

Vinicius Jr wants something that recognises his importance in a similar way. Madrid fear the consequences. Agreeing to a renewal bonus of that magnitude, they believe, would trigger a chain reaction inside the dressing room when the next round of renewals comes around.

He is willing to soften his demands to get a deal done. The club, so far, have refused to cross that line.

Arsenal sense an opening

Into that stand-off have stepped Arsenal, who have quietly turned a long-shot fantasy into a serious project.

Aware of the growing frustration over the lack of progress and the strain it has put on the player, the London club have been working in the background for months. Sources say sporting director Andrea Berta has held talks with the Vinicius Jr camp. Key figures at Arsenal have delivered a clear message: he would be the star of a powerful, coherent project, led by Mikel Arteta, the coach who just won the Premier League and only lost the Champions League final to PSG on penalties.

Inside Arsenal, there is no doubt. Vinicius Jr is their top target to transform an already title-winning attack. Their owners have signed off the concept and the financial scale of the move. If he chooses not to renew in Madrid, a switch to north London appeals to the player. Personal terms, in that scenario, are not expected to be a major obstacle.

“Mikel Arteta loves him,” says one person familiar with the manager’s thinking. “If he doesn’t renew, we will be there.”

The Gunners are building aggressively this summer. A midfielder is close – they are moving towards a deal for Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes. A centre-back is on the list, with William Saliba facing months out with a back injury. A left winger is a priority, on top of the €40 million signing of Christos Tzolis. Vinicius Jr is the piece that would change the entire picture.

Breaking the wage structure

Madrid have put €20 million net per year on the table. Arsenal know they would have to go higher and are prepared to bend their usual salary structure for a player of this calibre. A sign-on bonus and a favourable image-rights arrangement are also in play to make the numbers work.

There is another layer: timing and leverage.

If Madrid do not renew Vinicius Jr, they risk losing him for nothing next summer when his contract expires. He is also due a substantial loyalty bonus next season. Some at the club are deeply uneasy about the prospect of watching one of their most valuable assets walk away for free.

Arsenal intend to use that pressure. They hope the combination of an expiring deal, the looming loyalty payment and the player’s contractual freedom in 2027 can push Madrid towards accepting a reduced transfer fee now.

From the ownership’s perspective, the investment has a clear logic. Vinicius Jr is a marketing machine. Arsenal believe his arrival would rocket the club’s global profile and generate a major commercial uplift. Internally, some see him as a potential face not just of Arsenal, but of the Premier League itself. There is a belief this could rival – or surpass – any signing the league has seen.

Yet the pursuit is not being sold as a branding exercise. Inside the football department, the argument is straightforward: there are very few players on the planet who can genuinely elevate this Arsenal team. Vinicius Jr is one of them.

Diomande, Barcola and the Madrid calculation

The chessboard is crowded. Madrid’s anticipated move for Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig is being watched closely in London. People close to Arsenal see that potential signing as a signal: cover on the left wing in case Vinicius Jr departs. But that transfer is not done, and any delay or collapse could complicate Arsenal’s path.

Their intent shows in other areas of the market. Bradley Barcola has admirers at the Emirates, but Arsenal are not pushing hard for him. Liverpool are instead preparing an opening offer for the France international. It is a clear indication of where Arsenal’s energy is going. Vinicius Jr is the priority.

Inside Madrid, opinion is split. There are influential figures who would sell this summer rather than gamble on a free departure in 2027. The final call, as ever, rests with president Florentino Perez, long one of Vinicius Jr’s strongest backers along with Calafat. Jose Mourinho, back in charge at the Bernabeu, likes the player and has been in touch with him, but will ultimately accept the decision the club hierarchy make.

For now, three paths lie open in front of Vinicius Jr: renew at Madrid, run down his contract and walk away as a free agent next summer, or force the issue and join Arsenal now.

Arsenal at the big table

Arsenal know how ambitious this is. They know months of work and alignment do not guarantee success. A deal of this size, with these personalities and sums involved, is never simple.

Yet their presence in the conversation is significant in itself. A few years ago, the idea of Arsenal being a realistic destination for a prime-age Galactico would have sounded fanciful. Now, internally, they are operating on the assumption that Vinicius Jr would be open to joining if his relationship with Madrid cannot be repaired on his terms.

They see him as their most high-profile potential arrival since Mesut Ozil in 2013 – and on a different scale altogether.

The next round of talks between Madrid and Vinicius Jr, scheduled for next week when he returns to training, will be decisive. The wage, the bonus, the principle of how Madrid value one of their own. All of it is on the table.

If the renewal collapses, Arsenal will be waiting. The question now is simple: does Vinicius Junior write his next chapter in white, or in red?
