UNC Women’s Soccer Triumphs Over Arizona State 1-0

TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 9 Carolina didn’t dazzle in the desert. It didn’t need to.

A single, nerveless strike from the penalty spot was enough.

UNC women’s soccer closed out its road swing with a 1-0 win over Arizona State on Sunday afternoon in Tempe, staying perfect away from home and leaning once more on the right foot of Summer Denigan.

Denigan delivers again

In a match starved of clear chances, the breakthrough came in the 33rd minute.

Scottie Antonucci drove into the box and drew a foul, earning Carolina a lifeline in a game that had been locked in a midfield arm wrestle. Up stepped Denigan. Same routine, same result.

The midfielder drilled the penalty into the top right corner, out of reach and out of doubt, pushing the Tar Heels in front and extending her remarkable scoring streak to five straight games. It was her third goal from the spot this season, and her latest answer in tight, tense moments.

Before that, chances had been scarce. Carolina’s first shot didn’t arrive until the 18th minute, when Lilliah Blum fired over the bar. Nine more minutes passed before UNC finally earned the first corner of the day, but again, nothing doing.

The game needed a moment of composure. Denigan supplied it.

Defense locks it down

Once in front, Carolina’s back line went to work and never really let up.

The Tar Heels allowed just one shot from the Sun Devils in the first half, smothering space and denying any rhythm as they carried a 1-0 lead into the break. Arizona State finally tested UNC again three minutes into the second half, forcing goalkeeper Peyton Trayer into action with the hosts’ second shot of the match. She handled it, and with that save, any early second-half surge from the Sun Devils stalled.

From there, UNC tried to tilt the field the other way. The Tar Heels earned three corner kicks in a five-minute burst as they pushed for a cushion that never came. They finished with a season-low four shots, only two of them on target, a rare quiet day for an attack that has usually found more ways to threaten.

It didn’t matter. The defensive structure held.

Across 90 minutes, Arizona State managed only three shots, with just one on frame. Nine Tar Heels went the distance, grinding out every duel, every clearance, every second ball to preserve the clean sheet.

Road warriors, ruthless margins
