Kenya to Face Rwanda in Friendly Amidst Busy International Window

The Harambee Stars have crammed a third fixture into an already demanding international window, confirming a friendly against Rwanda on Monday, 5 October.

Benni McCarthy’s side were already staring at two crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Kenya host Eritrea at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, 26 September, then head west to face Guinea on Thursday, 1 October. Now comes Rwanda in Kigali to round it all off.

For McCarthy, the extra game is not a distraction. It is another laboratory.

The clash at Amahoro Stadium will hand the Kenya coach more minutes to test combinations, sharpen match fitness and stress‑test his ideas under pressure as the AFCON campaign gathers pace.

Rwanda, too, will arrive battle-hardened. The Amavubi first welcome Liberia in Kigali on Friday, 25 September, before travelling to meet 2026 FIFA World Cup debutants Cape Verde. Kenya will be their final assignment of a three‑week FIFA international window that could define their own momentum.

Busy camp, tight turnaround

Kenya’s players checked into camp on Tuesday morning, fully aware of the workload ahead. The staff have only a few days to drill the group before Eritrea come to Nyayo. Once that whistle blows, the calendar becomes relentless: home qualifier, away trip to Guinea, then straight into Kigali for the friendly.

Every session counts. Every selection, too.

McCarthy’s squad list blends returning experience with fresh opportunity. Hannif Wesonga and Vincent Harper are back in the fold, while Amos Wanjala has earned a call-up. Gor Mahia forward Shariff Musa has forced his way in on the back of eye-catching pre-season form.

There is also a nod to the future. Young winger Javan Ochieng has been summoned as he chases a senior international debut, a tantalising prospect in a window packed with competitive minutes. Captain Michael Olunga, the team’s reference point in attack, returns after injury, restoring both goals and leadership.
