UAlbany Great Danes Comeback to Draw with Stony Brook

ALBANY, N.Y. – Down two with ten minutes left and staring at a harsh home defeat, UAlbany refused to fold.

The Great Danes clawed back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium, salvaging a point from a match they largely controlled but nearly let slip away.

All UAlbany, But No Breakthrough

The tone was set early.

In the 5th minute, Sydney Kofton cracked the first warning shot of the day for UAlbany, a sign of what was coming. The Great Danes pushed the tempo, flooded forward, and piled up chances.

Stony Brook bent but held. Goalie Claudia Volino was called into action in the 24th minute for her first save, steadying the Seawolves as the pressure grew.

One minute later, the visitors almost stunned the home crowd. A drive from Maya Corbett in the 25th minute beat the keeper but not the woodwork, crashing off the post and bouncing away to keep the score locked at 0-0.

UAlbany responded with a barrage. Six more shots before halftime, wave after wave toward goal, but no finish. The sides went into the break still scoreless, the Great Danes on the front foot but with nothing to show for it.

Seawolves Strike Twice

The deadlock didn’t last much longer after the restart.

In the 56th minute, Stony Brook finally punished UAlbany, breaking through to take a 1-0 lead against the run of play. The goal shifted the mood instantly. The Seawolves, under pressure for most of the afternoon, suddenly had something to protect.

Then came what looked like the dagger.

In the 71st minute, Stony Brook doubled the advantage, stretching the lead to 2-0 and silencing the early urgency of the hosts. UAlbany, despite dominating much of the shot count, trailed by two and faced a brutal scoreline.

Blannett and Levac Spark the Comeback

The response was fierce.

With time slipping away, UAlbany finally broke through in the 80th minute. Meredith Blannett, active all afternoon, buried her first goal of the year to slice the deficit in half and ignite the Great Danes’ bench. Her strike made it 2-1 and turned the closing stages into a frantic chase.

The momentum never left.

Seven minutes later, in the 87th minute, Kiara Levac delivered the equalizer, capping the comeback and leveling the match at 2-2. Suddenly, a game that seemed lost had swung back to life.

UAlbany kept pushing for a winner. The Great Danes forced a corner in the dying seconds, one last chance to complete a remarkable turnaround. The delivery came in, but the decisive touch never arrived. The final whistle froze the score at 2-2.

Numbers Tell the Story

The stat sheet underlined UAlbany’s dominance.

The Great Danes outshot Stony Brook 30-16, hammering away all afternoon. Eleven of those UAlbany efforts hit the target, compared to just four for the Seawolves.

Kofton led the onslaught with 11 shots, a relentless presence in the attacking third, including eight headers and five attempts on goal. Blannett finished with her first goal of the campaign and six shots. Levac added the other goal and four shots of her own.

Stony Brook, now 3-0-4, 0-0-0 in CAA play, left with their unbeaten record intact. UAlbany, at 2-4-1 and 0-0-0 in America East, walked away knowing they had the chances to take all three points—but also the character to rescue one.

The Great Danes hit the road next, heading to Orono, Maine, for a Sunday matchup with the Black Bears on September 20. Kickoff at Alumni Field is set for 12:00 p.m.
