Trabzonspor Parts Ways with Fatih Tekke After Europa League Exit

Fatih Tekke’s second spell in Trabzon has come to an abrupt and emotional end, with Trabzonspor confirming they have accepted the head coach’s resignation days after initially trying to hold him back from the exit door.

The 48-year-old walked away in the wake of a brutal Europa League play-off defeat, a 5-0 aggregate loss to Hungarian side Ferencvaros that stripped away the optimism built over the past year and a half. Stung by the manner of the elimination, Tekke immediately offered his resignation, only for the club to push it back across the table on Friday, suggesting their coach had acted under the “intense emotional impact” of the European exit.

That resistance has now gone.

On Wednesday, Trabzonspor announced they had reached a “mutual understanding” with Tekke and agreed to part company, framing the decision as one taken “in line with Trabzonspor’s interests and long-term objectives”. The tone was respectful, almost elegiac, for a coach who had restored some pride and silverware.

Tekke leaves having guided the club to a third-place finish in the Super Lig last season and, crucially, having delivered a trophy. The club statement underlined that “over his approximately 18-month tenure, Fatih Tekke brought significant value to Trabzonspor,” highlighting both sporting and financial gains and his role in developing the players brought into the squad during his time in charge.

The defining line, though, was about the cup. By “bringing the Turkish Cup back to our museum,” the statement read, Tekke “once again wrote his name into Trabzonspor’s history” – a nod to a figure whose connection to the club stretches far beyond a single stint in the dugout.

The club also revealed a key detail in how the separation unfolded. Tekke, they said, had made it clear he “would never allow his presence to harm Trabzonspor in any way.” With the Europa League humiliation still raw and pressure mounting, both sides agreed that “drawing a new roadmap, prioritising the club’s interests above all else, had become unavoidable.”

And so a partnership that had seemed stable only weeks ago ends with a handshake, not a sacking. Trabzonspor closed their statement with a simple message: “We thank our coach for his efforts, his dedicated work, the successes he delivered, and the value he added to Trabzonspor.”

The club now faces the familiar Turkish football question: after an emotional exit and a broken European campaign, who has the authority – and the calm – to step into one of the most demanding jobs in the country?
