Towson Tigers Triumph Over Bucknell 3-1 in Women's Soccer

Towson, Md. – Towson needed a spark. It got three.

A ruthless first-half burst carried the Tigers to a 3-1 win over Bucknell in Sunday’s non-league women’s soccer matchup at Tiger Field, handing the Bison a fourth straight defeat and dropping them to 3-5 on the season.

Tigers Strike Early and Often

The tone changed quickly, just past the 14-minute mark. Towson’s Meron Koro reacted first when a rebound spilled loose after a save from Bucknell goalkeeper Sarah McFarland. With McFarland stranded, Koro calmly rolled the ball into an empty net to open the scoring.

Koro nearly doubled the lead minutes later, a warning that Bucknell struggled to heed. The pressure kept mounting, and it was a substitute who did the real damage.

Off the bench, Jayla Caldwell transformed the half. She struck twice in a five-minute span, both goals coming from corner kicks, as Towson surged into a commanding 3-0 advantage by the break.

Her first was textbook: a clean, decisive header that left no chance. The second came from chaos. Bucknell failed to fully clear another corner, the ball dropped to Caldwell’s feet, and she lifted a composed lob over McFarland and into the far side netting.

Bucknell had its moment in the opening period. On 20 minutes, Gaby Parker sliced between two defenders and broke into the box, only to see Towson keeper Keagan Williams close down the angle and smother the chance. It summed up the half: Bucknell’s best opportunity denied, Towson ruthless at the other end.

Bucknell Responds After the Break

The Bison came out of halftime with a different edge. They pushed higher, moved the ball quicker, and outshot Towson 10-9 in the second half. The game, finally, tilted toward their attacking third.

Bella Connell drove into the right side of the area with purpose, carving out space before running out of room near the byline. The intent was there, and soon the breakthrough followed.

In the 58th minute, Bucknell found life from a set piece. Off a well-delivered ball from Clare Nemsick, Louisa Thomsen rose and directed a header off the inside of the left post and just over the line. Towson’s lead shrank to 3-1, and Bucknell had its first real foothold.

It was Thomsen’s first goal of the season, with Nemsick collecting her second assist of the campaign.

Bucknell kept pressing, but Towson held firm. The Tigers still finished with a 21-16 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks, reflecting their early dominance and sustained threat.

In goal, McFarland recorded four saves in the first half before giving way to Reese Dolan, who posted 45 shutout minutes with two stops after the break. At the other end, Williams anchored Towson’s win with five saves.

What Comes Next

For Bucknell, the non-conference slate now closes with a test on the road at Villanova on Thursday at 4 p.m. After that, there’s no more easing in: the Patriot League campaign opens at home against Lehigh on Sept. 19.

The question now is whether this second-half response at Towson is a turning point, or just another missed opportunity in a four-game slide.
