Tottenham's £185m Midfield Rebuild: Pursuing Tonali and Fernandes
Tottenham Hotspur have already torn into this summer window with intent. Four major signings are through the door, a new spine is taking shape, and Roberto De Zerbi’s squad for next season looks far more muscular than the one he inherited.
And yet, the real headline act may still be to come.
Tonali pursuit refuses to die
Sandro Tonali sits at the centre of it. Tottenham have tested Newcastle United’s resolve with an £80m bid, knocked back on June 20 according to Sky Sports, but they have not walked away.
Newcastle want at least £100m for the Italy international. That is the price TEAMtalk report for a player they see as central to their own project. For Spurs, it is the cost of transforming their midfield in one go.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has doubled down on Tottenham’s pursuit. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he insisted he is not shifting from his line: Tottenham are working on a deal for Tonali and that stance has not changed. No Manchester City, no mystery European giant lurking in the background in his reporting. Just Tottenham, pushing.
The message is clear. The deal is live. The chase is serious.
Not either/or: Spurs want both Tonali and Fernandes
As if one nine-figure midfield deal was not bold enough, Tottenham are also driving hard for Mateus Fernandes.
The West Ham United midfielder, a Portugal international, has become one of the most coveted names in this window. Romano describes his situation as one of the most intriguing on the market. West Ham’s position is simple: they will accept the best proposal on the table. The player will then choose his destination.
The price is no secret. Romano has consistently reported that West Ham want £85m for Fernandes. Put that alongside Newcastle’s £100m stance on Tonali, and Tottenham are staring at a potential £185m outlay for two midfielders.
This is not a case of one or the other. Romano is explicit: Tottenham want Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Both.
Manchester United lurking in the shadows
Tottenham are not alone in this race. Manchester United, having already brought in Ederson from Atalanta, are still pushing for Fernandes as well.
Behind the scenes, as Romano tells it, both Tottenham and United are working on the deal. Both clubs are talking directly to the player. West Ham are waiting for the strongest bid. The decision, ultimately, will rest with Fernandes.
Tottenham, Romano says, are “pushing to close”. Manchester United are “still there”. It is a straight fight, and it is live.
A defining play in the De Zerbi era?
Four signings are already in place: Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka. That alone would mark a busy window. Yet the real shape of De Zerbi’s Tottenham will be defined by what happens next.
If Spurs land Tonali, they add a high-end, tempo-setting midfielder with Champions League pedigree. If they add Fernandes on top, they rip up their old midfield blueprint and write a new one in bold ink.
Two clubs. One of the most in-demand midfielders in Europe. Another already subject to an £80m bid. A potential £185m bet on the heart of the pitch.
Tottenham have made their move. The question now is whether they are prepared to go all the way.
