Thomas Tuchel is seriously considering fast‑tracking Arsenal prodigy Max Dowman into England’s senior set-up as a mounting injury list threatens to reshape his Nations League plans.

The 16-year-old, already a headline name at youth level, is under discussion for a call into the senior training camp at St George’s Park ahead of a demanding run of four fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.

He did not make England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, but his performances for Arsenal since then have strengthened the argument that he belongs in Tuchel’s long-term thinking. There has been talk of a loan to secure more minutes this season, yet The Sporting News understands Arsenal are more likely to keep him in-house.

If Tuchel does invite him into camp, it would be a clear sign that England’s manager is watching his development closely.

Tuchel’s selection puzzle

The England boss has been forced into a rethink. Rice’s withdrawal, driven by concerns over his fitness and heavy workload, strips experience and control from midfield. The Football Association moved quickly, confirming on Monday that Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White have been drafted in as replacements. Their arrivals restore some depth, but they do not close the door on further tweaks.

Dowman’s potential involvement would give Tuchel a different type of option: not an immediate starter, but a live look at a player who could feature heavily in the build-up to Euro 2028.

There is already a clear signal that age is no barrier in this England cycle. Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha was named in the original senior squad announced on September 18, underlining Tuchel’s willingness to hand young players a pathway if they are ready.

Nations League on the horizon

All of this unfolds with serious fixtures looming. England open their 2026-27 Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26, a high-pressure stage on which Tuchel can ill afford a slow start.

From there, they head to Prague to face Czechia on September 29, then travel to Rijeka to meet Croatia on October 3. The window closes with a return game against Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6.
