Thomas Partey Signs One-Year Deal with Al Shabab After Villarreal Exit

Thomas Partey has signed for Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab on a one-year contract, ending an uncertain summer for the Ghana midfielder.

The 33-year-old became a free agent in June after Villarreal confirmed they would not be renewing his deal, just a year after he arrived in La Liga on a free transfer following the expiry of his Arsenal contract.

Al Shabab announced the move on Friday with a short message on their official X account: “Just feels right.”

For Partey, it is another sharp turn in a career that has already taken him from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal, on to Villarreal and now into the increasingly star-studded Saudi league.

From Atletico to Arsenal and beyond

Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in October 2020 and spent five seasons in north London. At his best he offered control, bite and progression from midfield, though his spell at the Emirates was repeatedly interrupted by injuries and off-field scrutiny.

His departure from Arsenal last summer opened the door to Villarreal, but the stay proved brief. Twelve months on, he has opted for a new chapter in Riyadh with the White Lions.

A dressing room full of familiar faces

Partey will not walk into an unfamiliar environment. Al Shabab have quietly assembled a squad full of players with strong European pedigrees.

  • Josh Brownhill, a mainstay at Burnley for five years, joined the club last year.
  • Yannick Carrasco, Partey’s former teammate at Atletico Madrid, is already in place, offering a ready-made link to his past.
  • The club recently turned to Thomas Letsch as head coach, another sign of their ambition to blend European experience with Saudi investment.
  • Tin Jedvaj, Daniel Podence, Vincent Sierro and Yacine Adli add further depth and European know-how to a squad clearly built to compete at the sharp end of the Pro League.

For Partey, it is a chance to reassert his influence on the pitch in a team that expects to challenge.

World Cup involvement and legal cloud

On the international stage, Partey remains a central figure for Ghana. He started three of the Black Stars’ four matches at the 2026 World Cup, anchoring the midfield as he has done for years. He missed the group game against Panama after his visa application was refused, a decision linked to Canadian admissibility laws that can bar foreign nationals even without a conviction.

Away from football, his career continues under the shadow of serious legal proceedings in England.

The former Arsenal midfielder has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in London, relating to alleged incidents between 2020 and 2022. The charges involve three women. Partey has pleaded not guilty and has consistently denied all allegations.

A trial at Southwark Crown Court was initially scheduled for November 2026. That date has now been moved, with proceedings set to begin on 8 June 2027.

So Partey arrives in Saudi Arabia as both a marquee signing and a man with a major court case looming on the horizon. How he balances a high-profile role at Al Shabab with the weight of those proceedings will shape not only the final years of his club career, but his legacy in the game.
