Thomas Müller urges Bayern to sign rising star Johan Manzambi

Thomas Müller has seen enough. From Los Angeles to Bavaria, one name is now lodged firmly in his mind: Johan Manzambi.

The Bayern Munich great, a serial winner who knows a rising star when he sees one, is openly urging his former club to move fast for the Switzerland midfielder – and, crucially, to beat Manchester United to him.

A World Cup brace that turned heads

On Thursday at SoFi Stadium, with Switzerland already in control against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Manzambi came off the bench and changed the tone of the night. The 20-year-old struck twice in a 4-1 win, a statement performance in North America that echoed loudly back in Europe.

For Manzambi, it was more than just another step in his development. “Honestly, it’s incredible, it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that,” he said afterwards. Scoring twice, in front of family and fans, left him admitting he might not sleep. You believed him.

Clubs already knew the name. Now they’ve seen the stage he can handle.

United circling, Bayern warned

Manchester United’s interest is no secret. With Casemiro gone and Manuel Ugarte expected to follow him out, the club’s recruitment drive in midfield is in full swing.

  • Ederson Silva is on his way for £35 million.
  • United remain in the race for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes despite Tottenham’s push.
  • Real Madrid, according to sources, are softening their stance on Aurelien Tchouameni, a long-standing target for both United and Liverpool.
  • From Italy, there are claims United have joined the chase for Martin Baturina, the Croatia and Como talent who announced himself with a goal against England in his country’s World Cup opener.

And threaded through that web of names sits Manzambi, a player United have scouted and tracked, as previously revealed. Arsenal have been watching too.

Müller, though, wants no part of seeing him in red at Old Trafford. He wants him in red at the Allianz Arena.

Müller’s verdict: “FC Bayern should also consider”

Having watched Manzambi’s latest display, Müller went public. Speaking to MagentaTV, the Bayern icon laid out exactly why the Bundesliga champions need to act.

“He’s a good player overall. We’ve had him on our list for a while now,” Müller said. Then came the push. “For me, he’s someone, and now we can make a headline, that FC Bayern should also consider.”

This was not a throwaway compliment. Müller spoke of “flexibility” and a “carefree attitude,” but balanced that with praise for the maturity in Manzambi’s decision-making and work ethic. He pointed to Freiburg, where the youngster has been one of the standout performers, as the ideal finishing school.

Last season in the Bundesliga, Manzambi produced five goals and four assists for Freiburg, numbers that only hint at the energy and range he brings to midfield. He has been operating in a side known for its graft and structure, and thriving in it.

“He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good,” Müller added.

Then came the tactical breakdown. “He’s a player who can play as No.6, he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”

It was delivered with a smile, but the message beneath it was sharp: this is a modern midfielder who ticks almost every box.

A tug of war in the making

For Bayern, the warning is clear. A 20-year-old, already shining in the Bundesliga, now scoring a World Cup brace and attracting Premier League attention, does not stay on the market for long.

United are rebuilding their midfield core and have shown they are willing to invest and to move quickly. Arsenal, always on the lookout for versatile technicians, are in the frame. Other clubs are watching the same clips, reading the same data, making the same calls.

What Bayern have that others do not is a legend publicly banging the drum on national television, insisting the club act before a rival does.

Manzambi’s rise has been rapid but not reckless. Freiburg have shaped him in a demanding environment. Switzerland have trusted him on the biggest stage. Now the question shifts to the clubs.

Does Bayern listen to Müller and move to keep one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting young midfielders in Germany? Or does Manzambi become the next bright talent to slip into the Premier League machine, another “one that got away” for the Rekordmeister?

The race has started. The next move will say a lot about how serious Bayern are about refreshing their midfield for the years to come.
