Manchester United Pursue Chelsea Players for Left-Back Solution

Manchester United have thrown money and energy at reshaping Michael Carrick’s squad this summer. Around £150 million has already gone into the midfield alone, with Andrey Santos prised from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans arriving from Aston Villa and Carlos Baleba brought in from Brighton.

The spine looks stronger. The rebuild feels more coherent. But with the transfer window ticking into its final days, one problem area refuses to go away.

Left side becomes late-window headache

United’s recruitment team have been hunting a long-term solution on that flank all summer. That search has stalled.

Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract. Patrick Dorgu, despite his versatility, is viewed by Carrick more as a winger than a natural full-back. The balance of the squad is skewed, and United know it.

Targets identified earlier in the window have drifted out of reach. One of those was Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, admired but ultimately deemed too expensive. With first-choice options slipping away and the deadline looming, the club are now braced for a more pragmatic move.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has reported that United are actively considering a short-term fix at left-back, echoing the 2023 decision to bring in Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham.

“I will not be surprised if they [United] end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee, so maybe not a superstar name like Balde, because they considered Balde... but the deal is too expensive,” Romano said on his YouTube show.

He pointed back to that Reguilon deal as the template: an experienced, international left-back who can slot straight in, raise the level of competition and buy United time to reassess the position next year.

It is not the marquee signing some supporters crave. It might be the only realistic play left.

Chelsea’s Tosin offered – and a teenager off-limits

While left-back dominates the conversation, United’s defensive issues do not end there.

Injuries to Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt have stripped depth from the heart of Carrick’s defence. Harry Maguire remains, but the club want one more centre-back through the door before the window shuts.

That is where Chelsea come in.

According to talkSPORT, United have been given the chance to sign Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo. The 28-year-old, a product of Manchester City’s academy, looks increasingly likely to leave Stamford Bridge this month.

The signs are clear. Tosin was left out of Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham and has seen his No. 4 shirt handed to new signing Valentin Barco. A defender who arrived at Craven Cottage in 2020 and built his reputation as a reliable Premier League performer now finds himself on the fringes in west London.

The reported price – around £20 million – makes him a realistic option for United as they scramble for cover and competition alongside De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez and Yoro.

United’s interest at Stamford Bridge does not stop with Tosin. Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong is also on their radar, with the teenager viewed as a major prospect. But that is where the door slams shut. Acheampong is considered “untouchable” at Chelsea, and the club are not entertaining any offers.

So the picture is clear. Tosin is available at the right price. Acheampong is not.

A frantic finish in the market

For all the heavy lifting done in midfield, United’s window now risks being defined by what they can salvage in defence in its final days.

A short-term left-back. A mid-priced centre-back from a direct rival. Neither move screams long-term vision, yet both could prove essential if Carrick is to navigate a season already complicated by injuries and contract questions.

United have rebuilt the middle of the pitch. The next few days will decide whether the back line matches that ambition – or leaves Carrick one injury away from a familiar defensive crisis.
