Thilo Kehrer’s full Ajax debut could hardly have been scripted better. A goal, an assist, a bit of history – and a 5-1 away win at Fortuna Sittard on a Saturday night that felt like a statement.

Kehrer sparks Ajax surge

Ajax had already settled into their rhythm when Julian Brandt struck first, putting the visitors ahead and quietening the home crowd. The control was there, but the cushion wasn’t, and Fortuna made them pay for that early in the second half.

Kehrer’s night went beyond the scoreline. Speaking to ESPN NL after the match, Kehrer kept the focus firmly on the collective effort.

"I'm happy for the performance, the goal, and the assist," he said. "But the most important thing is that the team won. We had to work hard until we opened up the game, and then in the end it looked like a comfortable win."

The “comfortable” part only arrived once Ajax had broken Fortuna’s resistance. Before that, Kehrer had to ride out a scare of his own.

Pain, but no panic

Late in the first half, the defender took a heavy hit that briefly raised concerns on the Ajax bench. Any fears of a setback for their new signing faded quickly.

"It was just painful, but nothing to worry about," Kehrer explained afterwards.

He used the moment to underline something else: this backline is still a work in progress, and the conversations on the pitch cannot stop.

"In the end, it is about communication and giving each other the best instructions to defend together and adjust positions," he said. "It's all in a positive way to perform."

That insistence on detail matters for an Ajax side that has demanded greater stability at the back. Kehrer, who had played only eight minutes off the bench the previous week, already looks intent on leading that process rather than simply fitting into it.

Standards set, schedule looming

The scoreline will grab attention. Inside the dressing room, the message is different. Kehrer stressed that a 5-1 win cannot disguise the need to keep raising standards, especially with a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures ahead.
