Sunderland Set to Sign Malick Fofana for £30m as Europa League Push Intensifies

Sunderland are closing a statement summer move, agreeing a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana as they gear up for their first European campaign in more than half a century.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, underlining Sunderland’s intent to build around young, high-ceiling talent rather than merely making up the numbers in the Europa League.

The fee will see Sunderland pay an initial £25.6m to Lyon, with a further £4.3m potentially due in performance-related add-ons.

For a club only recently back in the top flight, it is a bold outlay, and one that places Fofana at the heart of their long-term project.

Fofana, who came through at KAA Gent before earning his move to Ligue 1 in 2024, is understood to be excited by the prospect of joining Sunderland on the eve of their first European adventure in 51 years. The timing suits both sides: Sunderland need a dynamic wide threat; Fofana wants a platform and minutes at a club on the rise.

The deal also represents a notable win in the market. Arsenal tried to bring the winger to the Premier League earlier in the window, but the champions failed to reach an agreement with Lyon over the fee. Sunderland stepped in, met the demands, and are now on the brink of landing a player who had been on the radar of England’s elite.

Fofana will not be the only new face walking into the dressing room. He is set to join Kevin Danso at the Stadium of Light, with the Austria defender due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy. It is a move that adds experience and presence to the back line, a necessary counterweight to the youth further forward.

The rebuild has been steady and deliberate. Sunderland have already secured defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, as well as midfielder Jules Ahoka, in what is becoming a quietly transformative summer.

All of it comes off the back of a seventh-place finish in their first season back in the top flight, a campaign that earned them that long-awaited Europa League ticket.
