Sunderland's New Pink Kit Faces Heartbreak in Ipswich Defeat

Sunderland’s bold new era in pink ended in a familiar shade of anguish.

On their first outing in an Elvis Presley-inspired away kit, the Black Cats were floored by a 90th‑minute winner in a 2-1 defeat at Ipswich, turning the tribute into a night of pure “Heartbreak Hotel”.

The club launched the striking pink-and-black strip in June as part of a collaboration honouring Presley, whose music has long been woven into Sunderland’s matchday soundtrack. The link stretches back to the late 1970s, with “Can’t Help Falling in Love” adopted as an anthem on Wearside and belted out by generations of supporters.

That song now runs inside the neck tape of the new shirt. At Portman Road, though, the away end might have preferred something a little less romantic and a lot more ruthless from their back line.

The trouble started with a gift. Captain Luke O’Nien, usually so reliable, played a careless pass out from the back in the 24th minute. Ipswich pounced. Julio Enciso read it, stepped in, and immediately slipped the ball into Emersonn’s path. One touch, one finish, and Sunderland were behind.

They did respond. The visitors grew into the game, began to pin Ipswich back and finally found a moment of quality six minutes before the break. Nilson Angulo stood over a free kick and whipped a superb effort beyond the wall and in, a strike worthy of salvaging something from a difficult afternoon in Suffolk.

At that stage, the new kit looked set to leave with at least a point attached to its story.

Then came the 90th minute. And with it, the sting that turned a marketing launch into a cautionary tale about lapses at the back.
