Shelbourne Secures 6-0 Victory to Reach FAI Cup Final

Shelbourne needed just six minutes at Turner’s Cross to show why they are chasing a treble – and they never let Cork City breathe after that.

A 6-0 demolition sent Sean Russell’s side into their fifth Club Orange Women’s FAI Cup final in six seasons, keeping alive hopes of adding this trophy to the Avenir Sports All-Island Cup and a fierce Women’s Premier Division title push.

From the first whistle, it was one-way traffic.

Shelbourne pressed high, snapped into tackles and moved the ball with a confidence of a team that knows exactly where it’s going this season. Cork City, rooted to the bottom of the table and trying to avoid a second straight year in the basement, were overwhelmed.

The breakthrough came early. Maeve Wollmer whipped in a cross, the ball struck Ciara O’Driscoll’s hand inside the area, and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Alex Kavanagh, who calmly rolled home the penalty to make it 1-0.

City’s response was to go long, hoping to turn Shelbourne’s back four. It didn’t work. Pearl Slattery marshalled the defence with authority, cutting out hopeful passes and snuffing out any hint of a counter.

The pressure told again on 15 minutes. From a Leah Doyle free-kick, Nia Hannon rose to meet the delivery and guided her header past Una Foyle for Shelbourne’s second. City were already hanging on.

Shelbourne smelled blood.

Their third goal carried a touch of misfortune for Cork. Halle Harcourt swung in a cross, the ball grazed the knee of Heidi Mackin as Isabella Marie Flocchini attacked it at the back post, and it ended up in the net for an own goal. By then, City were chasing shadows.

The hosts struggled to string passes together, never mind build sustained attacks. Shelbourne, by contrast, controlled the tempo and territory, moving the ball with purpose and showing no interest in easing off.

On 28 minutes, they struck again. Olivia Damico got free and squared the ball across the face of goal to the back post, where Wollmer arrived to finish for 4-0. The contest, in truth, was done before half an hour.

Cork did finally carve out a half-chance, pressing high for once and forcing a rare moment of uncertainty. Yuna Go’s pressure created a flicker of panic, but goalkeeper Mya Sanchez raced off her line to claim the ball and slam the door shut again.

Shelbourne went into the break cruising, and they restarted with the same intent.

Flocchini, lively on the right, forced Foyle into a smart tip-away from a dangerous cross, a reminder that Shelbourne still had plenty more in reserve even after four goals.

The fifth arrived in the 54th minute, born again from their aggressive press and targeting of City’s right side. Flocchini won the ball high up the pitch, drove forward and picked out an unmarked Wollmer at the St Anne’s End. The finish was simple; the build-up anything but, a snapshot of Shelbourne’s relentless work-rate and sharpness.

Russell turned to his bench as the half wore on, with the game long since decided. The changes did nothing to alter the pattern: Shelbourne probing, Cork pinned back.

There was still time for one last blow.

In stoppage time, substitute Kate Mooney stepped up to take a penalty and lashed it high into the top corner, a ruthless final touch on a statement semi-final performance.
