Sullivan Earns Call-Up to U.S. National Team at 16

Sullivan, just 16, will be among the 26 players Mauricio Pochettino calls into camp for a four-game U.S. friendly slate running from Sept. 26 to Oct. 6, a reward for a surge in form that has dragged a previously drifting Philadelphia Union back into the playoff picture.

He hasn’t slipped into this squad by accident. He’s driven his club’s revival, becoming a central figure in a Union side that hasn’t lost a league match since the World Cup. When Philadelphia needed a spark, the teenager supplied it.

This is not a sudden rise from nowhere. Sullivan has been woven into the U.S. Youth National Team pathway for years, first pulling on the shirt at U-15 level and steadily climbing through the ranks. Coaches know him. Teammates trust him. Now the senior setup is calling.

If he steps on the field in any of those four friendlies, Sullivan will write his name into U.S. history as the second-youngest player ever to appear for the national team, trailing only Freddy Adu, who made his debut back in January 2006.

Earlier this month, the youngster didn’t hide it: he wanted this shot with the U.S. Now it’s here. The only question left is how quickly he can turn promise into permanence on the international stage.
