Southampton Sign Divin Mubama on Loan from Manchester City

Southampton have moved quickly to reshape their squad, bringing in Manchester City striker Divin Mubama on a season-long loan on the very day they sanctioned a major sale.

The 21-year-old arrives at St Mary’s as Shea Charles departs for Fulham in a £30m deal, a significant outgoing that underlines the club’s need to find fresh energy and end product at the top end of the pitch. Mubama is the latest bet on potential – but this one comes with a clear scoring pedigree and a point to prove.

A striker with scars – and something to say

Mubama spent last season at Stoke City, where he scored five times in 28 appearances. The numbers only tell part of the story. His campaign was jolted in January in a 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers, when a heavy challenge left him with a ligament injury. Stoke boss Mark Robins called the tackle “terrible”. Mubama played just once more for the Potters after that.

Those months on the sideline slowed his momentum, but they did not stall his rise. A West Ham academy product, Mubama had already broken through in east London, making 18 appearances for the Hammers, eight of them off the bench in the Premier League. He was trusted enough to be named among the substitutes when West Ham lifted the Europa Conference League in June 2023, even if he did not get on the pitch that night.

The next step came this summer. Manchester City moved to bring him north, adding him to their attacking stable ahead of the 2024-25 season. For many young forwards, that could mean disappearing into the background. Mubama chose a different route.

Goals on tour, belief in his boots

City’s pre-season tour of Asia offered him a platform and he grabbed it. He scored against Inter Milan, then again versus the K-League All Stars, and laid on an assist in a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Seoul on Sunday. In a squad stacked with established internationals, he found ways to be noticed.

That form fuels his confidence as he heads to the south coast.

“With the way this team plays, when you've got players around you that have that much quality, you will be served,” Mubama told the Southampton website. “It's up to you whether you put the ball in the back of the net, and that's what I'm here to do.

“I’ve just come back from a pre-season where I've scored goals. I've been playing, I feel really fresh, I feel sharp, so I'm just really excited to get going.”

There is no hint of a player easing himself in. He is talking like a forward who expects chances and intends to finish them.

Southampton’s calculated gamble

Inside the club, the move has been framed as decisive. Sporting director Johannes Spors made it clear this was not a deal they were willing to let drift.

“As soon as we knew about Divin's availability we acted quickly to bring him here, not just because of his incredible goal scoring ability, but because of his work ethic and hunger to help the team, which will be vitally important this season,” Spors said.

That last phrase matters. This season. After cashing in on Charles, Southampton need immediate impact as much as long-term promise. Mubama fits both profiles: young enough to develop, hardened enough by Premier League benches, Championship battles and a serious injury to understand how thin the margins can be.

He joins a side that wants front-foot football, movement around the box and a striker willing to run, press and finish. He has already shown he can do that against elite opposition in pre-season. Now comes the real test: can he turn those summer flashes into cold, regular goals when the points count?

Southampton have made their call. Mubama has made his. The next 10 months will reveal whether this loan is just a stepping stone in his City career, or the moment he truly announces himself in English football.
