Southampton's Key Midfielders Ruled Out for Germany Trip
Southampton will head to Germany without three of their more intriguing midfield and attacking options, as Caspar Jander, Finn Azaz and Sam Edozie have all been ruled out of the eight-day pre-season trip through injury.
Tonda Eckert has named a 29-man group for the camp in North Rhine-Westphalia, where Saints will face Eintracht Braunschweig and Preuben Munster on either side of a week’s intensive work. The focus in Germany will be on rhythm, structure and fitness. For Jander, Azaz and Edozie, it will be about recovery.
All three are staying behind at the Staplewood training ground to receive treatment on what the club regard as minor knocks. The timing is frustrating rather than alarming. These are the days managers want everyone on the grass, learning patterns and building partnerships, especially in a squad still settling under Eckert’s demands.
Injury Updates
Jander’s issue is the most visible so far. The midfielder was forced off during Southampton’s opening pre-season outing against Eastleigh last Saturday, cutting short his first real chance to impress in match conditions this summer. The setback keeps him at home just as the competition for midfield places begins to sharpen.
Azaz and Edozie, both capable of changing the tempo in the final third, will also miss valuable minutes against German opposition. For fringe players and young talents, these tours often decide who starts the season in the manager’s inner circle and who waits their turn. This time, they will have to make their case on the training pitches of Staplewood instead.
Upcoming Schedule
The schedule leaves little room to ease back in. Once the squad return from Germany, Southampton’s season starts to gather speed: an EFL Cup tie against Colchester United, then straight into the grind of the Championship with an opening trip to Watford.
By then, Eckert will hope his three absentees are not just fit, but ready to fight for places in a side that cannot afford a slow start.
