Scott McTominay will step away from Napoli duty in the coming days to undergo heart surgery, with the club insisting the issue will not threaten his career.

The 29-year-old midfielder has been diagnosed with what Napoli describe as a “mild benign arrhythmia” and will have a corrective procedure in Italy.

Napoli move quickly to calm fears

The club released a detailed medical update on Tuesday, keen to explain both the nature of the problem and the expected timeline.

“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days. He will be available again after the international break,” the statement read.

Specialists have reassured Napoli that the condition is relatively common among elite athletes and does not pose a long-term threat to McTominay’s professional future. The operation is regarded as routine in modern sports medicine, but it still removes one of Allegri’s key pillars at a delicate moment in the season.

McTominay’s last appearance came in the shock home defeat to Como at the weekend, a result that underlined Napoli’s shaky start and now takes on a different complexion with news that their midfield anchor was already managing health concerns.

Allegri’s early problems deepen

Even before the heart issue emerged, Massimiliano Allegri had hinted that McTominay was not fully fit. Speaking after the loss to Como, the Napoli manager revealed the Scot had been training at reduced intensity.
