SC Cambuur Fans Injured by Fireworks During Match

SC Cambuur say fans suffered burns, hearing damage and eye injuries after Feyenoord supporters hurled fireworks into home sections during Sunday’s league match at the Kooi Stadion.

The game was halted for around 10 minutes in the first half when a large group of Feyenoord fans in the away end lit a mass of red flares and began throwing fireworks. Some were launched towards areas packed with Cambuur supporters.

In a statement, Cambuur confirmed that five home fans had been injured in the incident.

“Setting off and firing fireworks is completely unacceptable and has no place in a football stadium whatsoever,” the club said, condemning the scenes on what should have been a routine league afternoon for the side promoted back to the Eredivisie last season after three years in the second tier.

Feyenoord moved quickly to distance themselves from the behaviour. The Rotterdam club said it “firmly distances itself from the unacceptable events” and confirmed that head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst – assistant to Arne Slot at Liverpool last season – had apologised to SC Cambuur after the final whistle on behalf of Feyenoord.

Cambuur stressed it will work with local authorities to identify and punish those responsible. Feyenoord, for their part, said they would request camera footage as the investigation begins into how a league fixture again turned into a safety flashpoint instead of a football occasion.
