Rory Finneran Receives First Republic of Ireland Call-Up

Rory Finneran’s rise has just hit a new gear.

The Newcastle United midfielder has been drafted into the Republic of Ireland senior squad for the first time, joining Heimir Hallgrimsson’s group in Murcia ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Grenada at the Estadio Nueva Condomina (17:00 BST).

At 18, Finneran is still at the very start of his club career with Newcastle, having arrived from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, but his progress through Ireland’s youth ranks – under-17s and under-19s – has been steady and assured. Now he steps into the senior dressing room earlier than many expected.

The call comes amid a reshuffle Hallgrimsson could have done without. Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan and Ipswich Town winger Kasey McAteer have both been forced to withdraw through injury, opening space in a squad already juggling availability issues.

Then came the setback with Jaden Umeh.

The Benfica attacker, initially in line for his own senior debut, has been pulled out of the camp by his club. This fixture falls outside Fifa’s designated international window, which means clubs hold the power. Benfica chose to exercise it.

Their reasoning is clear. Benfica’s under-19s face a must-win clash with Famalicao on Saturday as they chase qualification for the Uefa Youth League. Umeh has become central to that push, underlined by his two goals in a 6-2 win over UD Leiria on Sunday. With their European route on the line, Benfica want their young forward on the pitch, not on a plane.

Hallgrimsson admitted this scenario had been on the radar. The plan was simple: Benfica’s under-19s would have secured their place by now and Umeh would be free to join Ireland without complication. Results went against them, the equation changed, and Ireland lost a player they were eager to see up close.

“It is unlucky for him,” Hallgrimsson said, acknowledging both the disappointment for Umeh and the logic of Benfica’s stance. The door, he made clear, will open again in a future window.

For Finneran, though, the door is open now. An unexpected gap in the squad has become an opportunity – a chance to train, to learn, and potentially to step onto the pitch in Murcia wearing senior green for the first time.

One teenager stays with his club to chase Europe. Another arrives in Spain to chase a debut. The margins that shape an international career can be small, but they can also be decisive.
