Gian Piero Gasperini did not bother hiding from the obvious. Inter Milan are the standard. Roma, he insisted, want to stand alongside them.

On the eve of a heavyweight clash at the Stadio Olimpico, the Roma head coach framed the meeting with the reigning champions as a test of whether his side can truly live at the top table of Italian football.

Inter’s domestic dominance and recent European finals make them, in Gasperini’s words, the benchmark. He openly admitted they still boast greater squad depth and a more ruthless consistency. Yet he spoke with clear satisfaction about Roma’s trajectory and refused to downgrade his team’s ambition.

For him, the Scudetto talk can wait. “Real” title credentials, he argued, can only be judged after 20 matchdays, when the table starts to separate contenders from passengers. Until then, nights like this one serve as a measuring stick.

A decade of defeats

If Roma are chasing validation, Gasperini is chasing a ghost of his own.

He walks into this fixture carrying a brutal personal record: ten straight defeats against Inter, accumulated across several managerial spells and different eras in the Nerazzurri dugout. Antonio Conte, Simone Inzaghi, now Cristian Chivu – the faces have changed, the outcome has not.

He did not shy away from that either.

“Are they my kryptonite? There was a period when I was able to get some results with Inter, but then in recent years we’ve always lost,” he admitted. “It might be the tactical aspect, but the coaches have changed from Conte to Inzaghi and Chivu, and the results haven’t changed. We’re up against a strong team.”

For a 68-year-old coach who has seen almost everything, that run still stings. Yet he framed it as the kind of negative cycle that can emerge against dominant sides, not as a psychological block he cannot shake.

The Olimpico offers him a chance to break it in front of his own crowd.

Injury worries ease for Roma

If the mental burden is heavy, the physical picture looks far lighter.

Gasperini confirmed that Manu Kone, Evan Ndicka and Wesley have all shaken off minor knocks and seasonal flu problems and will be fully available. That alone shifts the mood. So does the sight of Lorenzo Pellegrini back in the thick of it.

The Roma captain has rejoined full training over the last two weeks after a lengthy spell out, restoring both quality and leadership to the midfield. His presence, even if not yet at peak rhythm, gives Gasperini another high-level option in a game that will be decided on fine details.

The coach downplayed any concerns over residual fatigue. On nights like this, he argued, the tension, the occasion, the sheer weight of the opponent override tired legs.

Flank battle and a key selection call

On the tactical board, Gasperini knows exactly where Inter can hurt Roma: out wide, in transition, when their wing-backs spring forward and force you to turn.

That is why his choices on the flanks have become such a focal point.

He acknowledged that young prospect Lulli is still under serious consideration for a starting role on the right, an indication of how much trust the staff place in his potential. The “ideal combination,” as Gasperini put it, will be crucial in slowing Inter’s surges down the channels and cutting off their most dangerous routes to goal.

Referee storm brushed aside

Away from the chalkboard, another subplot swirled around the game: the appointment of Davide Massa.

The referee has been at the centre of recent controversies, but Gasperini refused to be drawn into any pre-emptive complaints. He backed Massa to deliver a flawless performance and steered the conversation firmly back toward the pitch.
