Roma Pursues El Mala Amid Serie A Uncertainty

AS Roma have put their cards on the table. In the hunt for a new left winger, the Giallorossi have added Said El Mala to their shortlist and, according to Geissblog, are prepared to go as high as 1. FC Köln’s €50 million asking price.

That figure is no bluff. Roma have already been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jean-Matteo Bahoya, with a fee of around €45 million under discussion. The message from the capital is clear: for the right young attacker, they are willing to enter the top end of the market.

There is, however, one major problem. The player himself.

Sky reports that El Mala, a seven-time Germany Under-21 international, does not currently view Italy as the right next step in his career. Roma can line up the money, they can offer the stage of Serie A and the Olimpico, but the 19-year-old’s immediate plans lie elsewhere.

Dortmund deal collapses amid anger in Cologne

Only a few weeks ago, Borussia Dortmund looked like the most natural destination. Young, attacking, Bundesliga football, a club built on the development of talents exactly like El Mala.

That door has been slammed shut.

Geissblog reports that Köln have definitively pulled the plug on talks with Dortmund. The financial package on offer was judged insufficient, yet it was the manner of BVB’s approach that truly infuriated the hierarchy at Geißbockheim.

Köln were, in their own words, “not in agreement with the manner in which Dortmund are said to have tried to influence the player in order to make a move more likely.” Internally, the response was swift and uncompromising: break off all negotiations with Borussia immediately. No more calls. No more meetings.

In one move, Dortmund removed themselves from the race – and left a bitter taste in Cologne.

Leipzig hesitate as price tag bites

With Dortmund out and Roma circling from abroad, the Bundesliga field has thinned dramatically. Only RB Leipzig remain as a serious domestic contender, and even that interest comes with a heavy asterisk.

According to Geissblog, Leipzig have informed Köln that they neither can nor want to meet the €50 million valuation at this stage. The admiration for El Mala is real; the financial firepower, for now, is not.

A twist is still possible. Leipzig’s stance could change if they generate significant funds from the sale of Yan Diomande. Offload the Ivorian, and the Saxony club might yet return to the table with a bid that brings them back into contention.

Until that happens, the asking price stands like a wall between El Mala and a move to the Red Bull Arena.

Shining on the pitch amid the noise

While executives argue over numbers and principles, El Mala is doing the one thing he can fully control: performing.

In Thursday’s 8-0 friendly win over Bergisch Gladbach, the 19-year-old found the net for the first time in this pre-season. It was a small moment in a routine summer thrashing, but a timely reminder of why clubs across Europe are willing to reshape their budgets for him.

Köln know what they have. Roma know what they want. Leipzig know what they can’t quite afford.

The question now is simple: where does Said El Mala believe his future truly begins?
