Rodri Set to Miss Barcelona’s La Liga Opener

Barcelona’s biggest summer signing is unlikely to be on the pitch when their La Liga season kicks off on Sunday.

Rodri skipped full group training on Saturday, the final session before Barça face Elche in their opening league fixture. The midfielder did not join his teammates on the pitch during the 15 minutes that were open to the media, a clear sign that his debut is set to be delayed.

Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Rodri once again worked away from the main group, following the same individual routine he carried out on Friday. No integration with the squad, no ball work in front of the cameras. For a player expected to be a central figure, the timing could hardly be worse.

The club has not announced a definitive decision, but barring a late twist, his first appearance in Barcelona colours will have to wait a few more days.

Rodri’s arrival has been the headline story of Barça’s summer. He landed in the city on Monday and was officially unveiled as a new Barcelona player on Tuesday, presented as a key piece for the new campaign.

Now, instead of stepping straight into the heart of the action against Elche, he looks set to watch his new team start their La Liga journey from the sidelines.
