Robert Moreno Takes Over as South Korea's Interim Coach After World Cup Setback

South Korea Names Robert Moreno as Temporary Head Coach

The Korea Football Association (KFA) has appointed Robert Moreno, former head coach of Spain, as the interim manager of the South Korean national team. This change comes after Hong Myung-bo resigned following South Korea's disappointing exit during the group stage of the World Cup held in North America in June.

Moreno, aged 48, steps in to manage a team currently facing significant challenges. His contract could be extended for the upcoming Asian Cup, depending on how the team performs under his leadership.

Moreno Becomes First Spaniard to Lead South Korea

The KFA selected Moreno through an open recruitment process aimed at filling the vacant coaching position. He is the first Spanish coach to oversee the South Korean national squad. Moreno is no stranger to international management, having previously served as assistant to Luis Enrique with Spain and temporarily taking charge when Enrique stepped away due to family illness in 2019. Their relationship later became strained before Euro 2020 when Enrique accused Moreno of disloyalty upon returning.

Challenges Within Korean Football

The appointment occurs amid turmoil within Korean football. Last month, police raided KFA headquarters related to Hong's 2024 hiring practices. Additionally, the federation issued a public apology over accusations involving providing inappropriate entertainment to foreign referees, adding to the unrest surrounding the association.

Moreno Denies AI Use Claims

Before joining South Korea, Moreno managed clubs including Monaco and Granada. Russian media had accused him of employing artificial intelligence tools while managing Sochi, a charge he firmly denied in an open letter to Spanish newspaper Marca. He stated, "I have never used ChatGPT or any AI to prepare matches, decide line-ups or choose players. That is completely false." Moreno emphasized that all decisions are collaborative with his coaching staff and highlighted his background in data and video analysis as key to his career start.

Upcoming Matches Ahead of Asian Cup

Moreno will lead South Korea in home friendlies against Ecuador and Uruguay in September, followed by matches versus Venezuela and Uzbekistan in October. Additional fixtures might be arranged for November. The KFA has confirmed Moreno could remain as coach for the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, running from January 7 to February 5, contingent on his performance. These games offer a chance to rebuild trust among fans and regain momentum for the national team.
