Real Madrid Target Zubimendi as Mourinho Seeks Midfield Control

Real Madrid have moved back into the frame for Martin Zubimendi, with Jose Mourinho pushing hard for the Arsenal midfielder to be brought to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Journalist Graeme Bailey reports that the Spain international is once again a live target for Madrid, as Mourinho looks to inject more experience, calm and control into the heart of his team.

Zubimendi only arrived in north London last summer, a €65 million signing from Real Sociedad who was widely tipped to become a cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s project. Arsenal saw him as a long-term organiser at the base of midfield, a player to knit together possession and protect the back line.

But the landscape has shifted.

Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival has reshaped Arsenal’s midfield hierarchy and, with it, Zubimendi’s sense of his own role. Inside his camp, questions are now being asked about whether he will remain as central to Arteta’s plans as he was led to believe when he left San Sebastian.

Those doubts have opened the door.

Arsenal open to sale – at the right price

Conversations have already taken place between Zubimendi’s representatives and interested parties as they gauge the market and his status at the Emirates. At 27, and having just made the leap to the Premier League, he is not keen to drift into a secondary role.

Arsenal, for their part, are not blocking the exit. The club are not actively forcing him out, but they are prepared to listen if a serious offer lands on the table. The stance is clear: respect the investment, respect the player, but don’t rule anything out.

That nuance is exactly what Real Madrid have been waiting for. The Spanish giants have tracked Zubimendi for a long time and now sense a possible opening to finally bring him home.

There is, however, a major obstacle. Arsenal paid €65 million only a year ago. They will not sanction a cut-price departure. Any negotiation starts from that outlay and likely climbs from there, making this a test of how badly Madrid and Mourinho want their man.

Mourinho’s stamp on Madrid’s midfield

Mourinho’s influence is already being felt. The Portuguese coach wants more authority in the holding role, a player who can read danger, dictate tempo and bring a veteran’s calm to big nights in La Liga and the Champions League. Zubimendi, with his La Liga pedigree and international experience, fits that brief.

Real Madrid’s interest predates Mourinho’s arrival, but his firm approval has given the pursuit new energy. This is not a speculative name on a longlist; this is a profile Mourinho has signed off on.

Contact has been made regarding the midfielder, and those close to the situation suggest Zubimendi is highly attracted by the prospect of wearing white at the Bernabeu. A return to Spain, but at the very top of the game, is an opportunity that would be hard to ignore.

For now, everything hinges on numbers. Madrid must first establish Arsenal’s asking price and then decide whether they are willing to meet the financial demands for a player who has only just completed his first season in England.

If they do, Mourinho gets his midfield general. If they don’t, Arsenal keep a high-class option in a suddenly crowded engine room.

One way or another, Zubimendi’s next move will say plenty about the ambitions of both clubs.
