Real Madrid Signs Ibrahima Konate on Free Transfer

Real Madrid have moved decisively in the market again, securing France centre-back Ibrahima Konate on a four-year deal after his departure from Liverpool.

The 27-year-old will join the European champions on a free transfer at the end of June, signing a contract that runs until 30 June 2030. Madrid confirmed they have an agreement in place for Konate to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, adding another powerful defender to a back line already stacked with talent.

For Liverpool, it marks the end of a significant chapter. Signed from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m, Konate arrived as a long-term pillar of the defence and leaves with a strong medal collection. Across 183 appearances in all competitions, he helped the club win the Premier League, the FA Cup and two League Cups, forming part of a side that consistently fought on multiple fronts.

The split comes down to numbers rather than performances. Liverpool and Konate failed to find common ground over his value and wages, and a gap in negotiations opened the door for Madrid to step in and close a deal without a fee.

The timing adds another layer to the story. Konate is currently with France at the 2026 World Cup, preparing on the global stage while his club future is now settled. Madrid, as so often, have acted early, tying down a player entering what should be the peak years of his career.

There is, though, a sense of unfinished business on Merseyside. Konate admitted he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye” to Liverpool supporters when the Reds played their final Premier League game of the season against Brentford on 24 May. At the time, he said, “I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.”

No farewell lap. No choreographed send-off. Just a defender walking off at Anfield, unaware that his next steps would lead to the Bernabeu.

Now he swaps the Kop for the cauldron of Madrid, a free transfer with the weight of expectation, stepping into a dressing room built to win everything, every year.
