Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano: Key Players Return for Mourinho
Real Madrid face Rayo Vallecano at the Bernabeu with no room left for error. Three points off Barcelona and staring at a brutal run of three games in nine days, Jose Mourinho knows this is the stretch that will shape their early season.
Slip now, and the leaders could disappear over the horizon.
A crowded calendar, a thin margin
Rayo at home, Elche away on Tuesday, then Atletico Madrid in a capital derby that will leave bruises. That’s the sequence. Mourinho has been around long enough to know these are the weeks that drain legs and expose squads.
At least this one starts with some good news.
Several players who missed the last match against Inter are back in the frame. The squad that travelled to face the Italians was stripped bare by suspensions and injuries. Now, some key pieces return just in time.
Reinforcements for Mourinho
Aurelien Tchouameni is back at Mourinho’s disposal, a major boost in the middle of the pitch. He featured against Inter, but his availability here gives the coach more freedom to rotate and re-balance his midfield.
Marco Asensio has also rejoined the group after resuming full training, recovering from an untimely injury that halted him just as the season was taking shape. Thiago is back in contention as well, adding another body in an area that will be stretched by the upcoming schedule.
Those returns matter because the Inter game exposed how thin Real had become. Arda Guler, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva all sat out that match through suspension, punished for red cards picked up in last season’s Champions League campaign.
Now the bans are over. The options are back. And so are the selection headaches.
The big question: who partners Bernardo Silva?
Mourinho’s main dilemma sits in midfield. One spot is locked: Bernardo Silva is expected to start. The debate is over who lines up alongside him – Eduardo Camavinga or Federico Valverde.
Valverde has been the workhorse of the campaign. He has played all four of Real’s La Liga matches and one in the Champions League, barely leaving the pitch. The Uruguayan has missed just over 20 minutes all season, substituted in the 77th minute against Malaga and taken off for the final eight minutes against Real Betis.
He never stops. Mourinho knows he probably has to.
The Portuguese coach has shown he is ready to manage minutes aggressively at this stage, wary of burning out key players before the decisive months. Bernardo Silva is the perfect example. The playmaker started the first two league games, then came off the bench against Malaga and Real Betis, totalling 205 of a possible 360 minutes – around 57% of available league time.
That usage tells its own story. Mourinho trusts him, but he is rationing him. He does not want to overload his compatriot before the season truly bites.
So the choice is clear: keep riding Valverde’s relentless energy or give Camavinga the nod to share the load. One of them starts. The other becomes a powerful weapon from the bench.
Arda Guler’s chance to push back
Up front, another subplot is quietly building.
Arda Guler is expected to return to the starting XI after missing Real’s Champions League opener. The Turkish talent has started the season strongly, but he knows the reality of life in this squad: no attacking role is safe.
Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham are as close to untouchable as it gets in Mourinho’s plans. All three are expected to start against Rayo. That leaves Guler fighting for every available space, every minute, every chance to convince.
He cannot afford an off day. With competition this fierce, each appearance has to strengthen his case to remain among the coach’s first-choice options, especially in a run where rotation will be necessary but not guaranteed.
Defence set, Cucurella settles
At the back, Mourinho is unlikely to tinker much. The defensive unit that faced Inter should remain intact.
Thibaut Courtois will start in goal. In front of him, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen and Marc Cucurella form the back four.
Cucurella, in particular, appears to have secured a more stable role, growing into the side and earning the coach’s trust. The rest of the defence also looks established, with no indication Mourinho is ready to disrupt that structure in a game Real simply must win.
Diaz waits, bench power grows
On the bench, there will be quality – and frustration.
Spanish outlet AS reports that Brahim Diaz is expected to start among the substitutes, alongside Yan Diomande. With so many options available, that is the reality for players on the fringes: strong enough to start for many, but asked to wait their turn here.
It underlines how settled this Real Madrid XI is becoming. The only major decision still hanging is that midfield slot: Valverde or Camavinga.
Everything else feels locked in.
Expected Real Madrid XI vs Rayo Vallecano
- Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois
- Defence: Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen, Marc Cucurella
- Midfield: Bernardo Silva, Federico Valverde or Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham
The stakes are simple. Beat Rayo, stay on Barcelona’s heels, roll into Elche and the derby with momentum. Drop points again, and this early-season chase could start to look like a long, uphill climb.
