Raúl Asencio Returns to Real Madrid Squad Under Mourinho

José Mourinho has his squad. And he has Raúl Asencio back.

On the eve of Real Madrid’s league meeting with Rayo Vallecano in the fifth round of the Spanish season, the Portuguese coach named a group that quietly carries a significant subplot: the return of a defender who has not played a single minute under him.

Asencio back from a long, messy lay-off

Asencio reappears after around a month and a half out, a stop-start spell that began with a muscular problem in the rectus femoris and was then complicated by a setback in his shin. The timeline has been long enough to blur him into the background of Mourinho’s plans.

Until now.

The Spaniard has been working with the group in recent days, completing full sessions and convincing the medical staff and Mourinho that he is ready to compete. That was enough to earn him a place in the squad for the Rayo trip, the first real opening he has had since the coach arrived.

The timing matters. Real Madrid face a congested run of fixtures, including midweek league games, and Mourinho has been short of options at centre-back. Asencio’s name back on the list gives him one more body in a zone where rotations will not be a luxury but a necessity.

A turbulent summer, on and off the pitch

This comeback also draws a line under a chaotic summer for Asencio.

He had been close to leaving Real Madrid, his future apparently drifting away from the Bernabéu, before injury froze any negotiations and left him stuck in limbo. While he recovered, his name stayed in the headlines for reasons that had nothing to do with football.

On the judicial front, the defender was recently acquitted in the case linked to a video he appeared in. At the same time, a court convicted him of driving under the influence of alcohol on the island of Gran Canaria last August.

Mourinho did not hide his anger. The coach went public with his displeasure, reminding the player and the squad of the weight that comes with the shirt: “A Real Madrid player remains a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. What you do outside the club can harm your reputation and the club's reputation, and I am not happy.”

The message was clear. The margin for error is gone.

Now fit, Asencio turns back towards the pitch. He has his place in the squad, but not yet in the team. That must be earned, and under Mourinho that usually comes through consistency, discipline and reliability rather than reputation or promise.

Key absences and a deep squad

While Asencio returns, three big names drop out. Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo are all missing from the list for the Rayo match, trimming options in defence and attack and underlining why Mourinho will welcome every extra piece he can trust.

Even so, the squad sheet still reads like a statement of power.

In goal, Thibaut Courtois leads the group alongside Lunin and Sergio Mestre. The defence now includes Asencio, Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Konaté, Cucurella, Carreras, Rüdiger and Dumfries, giving Mourinho a mix of youth, experience and versatility across the back line.

Midfield offers its usual wealth: Bellingham, Camavinga, Valverde, Tchouaméni, Arda Güler, Bernardo Silva and Thiago Pitarch. Any combination there can control a game or change its rhythm.

Up front, Vinícius, Endrick, Mbappé, Espí, Brahim Díaz and Diomandé carry the responsibility of turning dominance into goals.

Amid all that star power, Asencio’s name might look small. For him, it is anything but. After an injury, a stalled transfer, a court case and a public rebuke from his coach, simply being back on this list is a door reopening.

What he does with it, in a Real Madrid side fighting on all fronts and under a manager who rarely forgives lapses, will define whether this is just a brief return or the real start of his career under Mourinho.
