Qatar's Assim Madibo Suspended After Serious Tackle on Ismael Kone

Qatar’s Assim Madibo has been hit with a five‑match suspension after the tackle that left Canada midfielder Ismael Kone with a broken leg at the FIFA World Cup.

The challenge, which came in the 54th minute of Canada’s 6-0 win last week, brought a straight red card and immediate fury on the pitch. Now it has drawn the full weight of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, which classified the incident as “serious foul play” and imposed a ban that will stretch well beyond this tournament. Madibo has the right to appeal through the FIFA Appeal Committee, but for now he is out of the picture.

The incident overshadowed a statement performance from Canada, who ruthlessly dismantled Qatar on the scoreboard while Kone was left facing surgery and a long rehabilitation. The images of the midfielder being treated and then taken off told their own story; the confirmation of a broken leg only underlined the severity of the tackle.

Away from the noise and the replays, the two players met again in very different circumstances. In the days after Kone’s operation, Madibo visited him in hospital, a gesture Qatar’s federation moved quickly to highlight.

“This visit reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field,” the Qatar Football Federation said, adding its wish for Kone’s “speedy recovery and a quick return to the pitch.”

For Madibo, a 29-year-old born in Khartoum and capped 53 times by Qatar, the episode marks a brutal twist in a long international career built on energy and commitment in midfield. One mistimed challenge, one split-second decision, and he now watches his country’s World Cup fate from the stands.

Qatar close out their group stage later on Wednesday against Bosnia and Herzegovina, still clinging to the possibility of reaching the knockout rounds. They must win. They must do it without one of their most experienced players.
