Portsmouth Sign Chelsea Winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to sharpen their wide options with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen.

The 17-year-old, one of the latest products off Chelsea’s academy line, already has a senior appearance to his name. He featured in a 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale, a gentle glimpse of first-team life in a side stacked with attacking talent.

Chelsea tied him to professional terms in January, a clear marker of how they view his potential. From there, his rise quickened. Kavuma-McQueen made the first-team bench in the Champions League last season for heavyweight ties against Paris St-Germain and Ajax, and he was also named in the match-day squad for Premier League games against Liverpool and Tottenham as the campaign drew to a close.

Inside the academy, he has climbed each rung. Regular football for Chelsea’s Under-18s, then a step into the U21s, where he held his place and continued to impress. Comfortable off either flank, he brings pace and direct running, the kind of profile modern wide players are built on.

At Fratton Park, he will drop into a busy, competitive group of wingers. Kavuma-McQueen joins a wide unit that already includes new signing Abu Kamara, along with Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith. Minutes will have to be earned, not handed out.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho made no secret of how long the club have been searching for this type of addition. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, he said they had been in the market for wingers “for quite a while” and that Kavuma-McQueen “ticks all the boxes” for the kind of attacker they want. Mousinho highlighted his speed, his direct style and his ability to operate off both sides, stressing that his age underlines how highly both Portsmouth and Chelsea rate him.

Kavuma-McQueen spent pre-season away with Chelsea’s first team and got minutes on their tour, another sign of how close he is to the elite level. Portsmouth have tracked his progress throughout his youth career and took particular notice when he stepped up to the U21s last year.

Now, they have their man through the door. Mousinho believes the teenager will mesh with Pompey’s attacking approach and has made it clear the club are “really pleased” to have the deal done.

For Kavuma-McQueen, this is the next test: swapping academy promise and Champions League benches for the grind of a full campaign, where every run, cross and decision will be judged by a demanding Fratton Park crowd.
