Nottingham Forest have made a major statement in the market, landing Côte d’Ivoire centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting in a deal reported at £34.2m.

The 22-year-old, fresh from featuring in his country’s World Cup squad, has signed a four-year contract at the City Ground, with Forest holding an option to extend for a further year. It is the sort of signing that underlines a club no longer content just to survive.

“He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age,” said Forest’s chief football officer, George Syrianos. “Playing a crucial role in title winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest.”
