Nottingham Forest Sign Ousmane Diomande for £34.3m

Nottingham Forest have made a statement at the back, completing the £34.3m (€40m) signing of Ivory Coast centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting on a four-year deal.

The Forest head coach pushed hard for Diomande, having tried to bring him to Crystal Palace during his time at Selhurst Park. He didn’t get him then. He has him now – and at 22, the defender arrives with a résumé that already reads like a seasoned winner’s.

Diomande leaves Sporting after four seasons, 132 appearances, seven goals and two Primeira Liga titles. He has lived in the pressure zone: a domestic double in 2024/25, Champions League knockout football, and a place in an Ivory Coast squad that delivered the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations – the country’s first AFCON crown in eight years.

For a defender still in the early stretch of his career, that is heavyweight experience. Fifteen caps for his country. A World Cup appearance this summer. Big nights, big stages, big expectations.

Forest are buying more than potential. They are buying a player used to playing where mistakes are punished and medals are handed out.

Diomande’s first words as a Forest player carried the tone of someone who understands the size of the move.

“I am very happy to be here. It is a historic club, and it motivates me to join such a club. I believe we can achieve very good things this season and I am looking forward to meeting the players and head coach.

“I will give my best and all I can to help the team. I cannot wait to meet the supporters at the City Ground and together we can have a good season.”

No grandstanding. Just a clear promise of commitment and a nod to the club’s tradition. Forest’s hierarchy believe they have found a defender whose mentality matches his frame.

Chief football officer George Syrianos made no attempt to hide the club’s long-term planning around this profile of signing.

Powerful. Commanding. Winning mentality. Those are not throwaway words for a side that has had to firefight at the back too often in recent seasons. Diomande is being brought in to anchor, to organise, to give Forest a central defender around whom a back line can be built.

A rebuild with an edge

The Diomande deal headlines a busy window at the City Ground, one that has already seen major movement in and out of the club.

Incoming, Forest have added Boyd Fraser from Hearts, Mason Ayre from Glentoran, Blaine McClure from Rangers, Xaver Schlager from RB Leipzig on a free, Grady McDonnell from Club Brugge and Kasen Brown from Manchester City, also on a free. It is a mix of youth, experience and opportunism.

Outgoing, the numbers are just as striking. Elliot Anderson’s £116m move to Manchester City stands out as a landmark sale. David Carmo and Jota Silva have gone to Olympiacos, the latter on loan. Joe Gardner has joined Falkirk, Cormac Daly has moved to Hearts, while Angus Gunn has crossed the Atlantic to San Jose Earthquakes.

There has been a clear clearing of the decks: Ben Hammong to Boston United, Justin Hanks to Solihull Moors, Danny Anisjko to Chesterfield, with Willy Boly, Stefan Ortega, Shae Cahill and Esapa Osong all released.

Forest are not tinkering. They are reshaping.
