Ruben Amorim has wasted no time putting his stamp on Milan – and the first major casualty of his reshuffle is a headline name. Christopher Nkunku has been placed on the transfer list, a surprise decision with just under two weeks left before the summer window closes.

The 28-year-old, once a focal point of Milan’s pre-season plans, now finds himself training on the fringes at Milanello, pushed away from the core group as Amorim refines his squad. The early infatuation has faded. The hierarchy has been handed a clear list of expendable players, and Nkunku is on it.

That news has travelled quickly down the motorway to Rome.

Roma return for long-time target

Roma have moved straight back into a story they thought was closed. According to Calcio Mercato, the Giallorossi are closely tracking Nkunku’s situation, ready to exploit the sudden opening as they look to strengthen their attack.

Their interest is anything but new. During the January window, Gian Piero Gasperini identified Nkunku as the perfect tactical fit for his system, particularly on the left side of the attack. The former Chelsea forward ticked every box. The problem? Both the player and Milan’s hierarchy shut the door. Hard. Any approach was met with firm resistance, and the idea died there.

The admiration, though, never did. Roma’s regard for Nkunku has remained intact, and now the landscape has changed.

Soule as the key to a blockbuster swap

On paper, it fits almost too well. Soule has been a prominent name on Milan’s shortlist as they search for a creative presence to elevate their attacking midfield. His profile aligns neatly with Amorim’s ideas between the lines. For Milan, inserting Soule into the negotiation isn’t a compromise; it’s a target acquired by different means.

For Roma, Nkunku would give Gasperini the left-sided attacker he wanted back in January, finally delivering the tactical piece he had already imagined in his system months ago. Two clubs, two coaches, both potentially walking away with their preferred attacking solution in one stroke.

A direct swap between two Serie A heavyweights. High-level, high-stakes, but also surprisingly balanced.

Fees aligned, wages don’t

From a valuation standpoint, the deal is almost ready-made. Both clubs are said to rate their players in a similar bracket, around €35m to €40m. That removes one of the classic flashpoints in a swap negotiation.

The real problem sits on the wage slip.

Nkunku’s salary is significantly higher than Soule’s. Reports indicate the Argentine currently earns just over half of what the Frenchman takes home. That gap creates a financial fault line that Milan and Roma must bridge before anything can move.
