Newcastle United Eye Youssouf Fofana as Midfield Solution
Newcastle United’s search for midfield reinforcements has taken another turn, with AC Milan’s Youssouf Fofana emerging as the latest name on a growing shortlist.
With a little over two weeks left in the transfer window and Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali both gone, Matthias Jaissle is pushing for both experience and depth in the middle of the park. Newcastle have already spoken to Bayern Munich about Joao Palhinha, while Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall is also under consideration. Now, attention has drifted to Serie A.
Fofana told he can leave Milan
Italian reporter Matteo Moretto revealed on Saturday that Newcastle have made an enquiry for Fofana after Milan informed the France international he is no longer part of their plans.
“Fofana is on his way out, and he was informed of this in person,” Moretto said, via MilanNews. “I can assure you that there aren't any advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time.”
Newcastle are not alone. Moretto named the Magpies as one of three clubs to have already contacted Milan about the 27-year-old’s situation.
“I can tell you that Nottingham have inquired, Newcastle have inquired, and Juventus have inquired,” he reported.
So far, that interest remains exactly that: interest. No bid, no formal negotiations, just a line of communication open with Milan.
Juventus push harder as race takes shape
While Newcastle weigh up their options, Juventus look to be moving with more intent.
“Fofana is certainly an option for Juventus, and the two clubs, Juve and Milan, have spoken and discussed possible situations and market developments,” Moretto added.
That dialogue places Juve slightly ahead in the race, at least for now, with Newcastle still at the exploratory stage as they juggle multiple targets and a tight timeline.
A cheaper solution in midfield?
Fofana only arrived at Milan from Monaco in 2024 for around €20 million (£17.3 million) and is under contract until 2028. Even so, Milan are prepared to cash in.
Reports differ on the exact asking price, but most place it in the €15–20 million range (approximately £13–17 million). That bracket would likely make Fofana significantly cheaper than some of Newcastle’s other midfield options, including Palhinha, whose fee and wages would be substantial.
For a club needing to replace both the quality and the numbers lost in midfield, that price point matters.
Situation wide open
Despite the growing interest, there is still no agreement in sight.
“There aren't any advanced negotiations with any specific club at this time,” Moretto reiterated, underlining how fluid the situation remains for Milan and Fofana.
Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Juventus are all at the table. Milan are ready to sell. The clock is ticking.
Now the question is simple: will Newcastle turn a tentative enquiry into a concrete move, or watch a potential solution to their midfield problem head elsewhere?
