This is only a friendly, yes. Bigger, more meaningful fixtures lie ahead. But the trend is starting to glare. Newcastle are creating some opportunities, but not nearly enough. When the chances do come, they’re not being taken with the kind of cold precision that defines serious contenders.

It dogged Eddie Howe last season. Now Matthias Jaissle inherits the same riddle.
