Liverpool's Centre-Back Crisis Ahead of Premier League Season

Andoni Iraola heads into the new Premier League season with a squad that looks worryingly thin in key areas, and nowhere is that more obvious than at the heart of his defence.

Liverpool open their campaign away to Newcastle next weekend, yet as things stand Virgil van Dijk is the only fully fit senior centre-back available. Around him, it’s a patchwork of injuries, recoveries and short-term fixes.

Centre-back crisis forces Iraola’s hand

New signing Jacquet was supposed to ease that burden. Instead, his start has been stop–start before the real football has even begun. An unspecified issue kept him out of the recent 3-2 defeat to Monaco, adding to the concerns that already shadowed his £60million arrival from Rennes, where a shoulder injury cut short his final season.

He has yet to feature in pre-season, but there is finally a glimmer of progress. Jacquet is back in full team training and has been thrown straight into the line-up against Como. Iraola is clearly keen to accelerate his integration, but he is treading carefully.

The manager has also moved in the market. With options dwindling, Liverpool have brought in Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona. The Uruguay international starts the evening on the bench, a powerful insurance policy rather than an immediate solution, but his presence alone underlines how stretched the squad has become.

Injuries piling up at the back

The problems do not stop there. Giovanni Leoni is still working his way back from the ACL injury he suffered on debut a year ago, a long, grinding recovery that has kept him out of contention ever since.

Joe Gomez, another key defensive option, limped off during the 4-2 win over Sunderland in the USA last month, replaced by youngster Ifeanyi Ndukwe. That muscle problem is expected to derail his start to the season and leaves Iraola leaning even harder on Van Dijk and the new arrivals.

On top of the injuries, there has been a major departure. Ibrahima Konate left Liverpool on a free transfer when his contract expired, later signing for Real Madrid. His exit has removed another experienced pillar from the back line at the very moment the club can least afford it.

Midfield concerns and late returns

The issues are not confined to defence. Curtis Jones has been dealing with a hip problem, all while transfer links to Inter Milan swirl in the background. He returned to training this week after missing the Monaco defeat, but he is not involved again here, a reminder that his fitness and future both remain unresolved.

Victor Munoz and Alexis Mac Allister have rejoined the squad after their post-World Cup breaks. They were eased back in on Sunday in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Como at the training ground, a 70-minute run-out that finished goalless and featured largely Liverpool’s second string.

Munoz has at least made the bench for the second meeting with Como at Anfield and will be pushing for more minutes as a substitute. Every extra option helps now.

A week from the trip to Newcastle, Iraola’s plans are being shaped as much by medical bulletins and contract decisions as by tactics. The season hasn’t started yet, but Liverpool are already playing catch-up in the one area no Premier League side can afford to be weak: the spine of their team.
